Hi there,

I have done a bit of over clocking in the past, and I'm just trying to squeeze the last bit of speed out of my current rig before a big upgrade next year.

I have an ASUS A78N Deluxe board with an AMD 2800+ chip, I also have a Radeon 6600pro graphics card, and 1 Gb of ram.

I have heard that you can get these chips to run quicker, is this possible? If so how do you do it and how much extra performance to you get?

Cooling is no problem, as I have a thermaltake tower heatsink and fan and loads of case cooling, thats keeping my chip at 29 deg and my board at 20.

I tried increasing the external chip freq to 200mhz, but I just get a memory failure on start up, is this just my RAM being old and slow? How much memory will my board take and which is the best to get, and if I get new ram will it be compatible if I upgrade?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

In the BIOS, keep the memory speed to standard (probably 166mhz on that processor) and increase the fsb setting slightly (about 5mhz at a time I think is reccomended), run a couple of benchmarks to test the stability, then up it a little more if its fine. This will run the memory and the processor slightly quicker. Oh and make sure to keep the AGP/PCI speed to 66/33, or it'll crash.
If you upgrade the memory, get DDR400. Its compatible with socket 939 motherboards so you can get an Athlon 64 / X2.

if the mobo is an A78N-E deluxe then you will be hard pushed to overclock it much.

i had one with a 2800xp and was lucky to get anything out of it and 200fsb was a big no-no. i also noticed the voltages were a bit flakey on it too.

swapped it for an nf7-s and i ran it at 200fsb =2.5ghz 24/7 no problem.
