Hello

Was wondering if anyone has come across this issue before. I've just recieved my new Studio 17 from dell and I want to put Vista Ultimate 32 on it. It copys the files, then asks what language/location I want to use then I get a message saying...

"A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing..."

I tried putting the driver disk which came with it in but it couldn't find a driver on that. I tried putting that disk into my other machine and locating the driver manually but still couldn't find it. I had a look on the dell website but it lists 0 drivers for optical drives for the studio 17.

By the looks of it I can't get past this stage without a driver but I don't really understand why. It's booting from that drive and copying the files so why does it need a driver?

Has anyone else had this or know how to get around it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

Yeah I had seen that but I just assumed it happens with 32 and 64.

Was gonna try this when I got home tonight:

"See if you get the same error if you switch from AHCI to ATA mode in the BIOS."

From post 4 in that thread but I didn't understand the rest of their post. It said something about not finishing the install with it set to ATA otherwise it would cause a blue screen loop or something.

I was also going to try the media direct disk at the stage where it asks for the driver to see if that works cause I think I read somewhere the driver might be on that disc. Still not sure if that will work or not and if it doesn't I'm back to square 1.

I think what he means is, if you've got part way through the installation and are having the DVD driver error don't just switch to ATA mode in the BIOS and carry on with the installation - it will bluescreen. Instead, switch modes then re-start the installation..........that's what I read it as

Well I tried switching to ATA in the bios and after I had done that it no longer asked me for a driver before installing windows, it just went straight into the install and finished without any problems. However when I finished the install and tried switching it back to AHCI, it just does that blue screen loop thing that some of the other users in that forum experienced. Switch back to ATA and it boots into windows OK.

I don't fully understand the difference between AHCI and ATA or the benefits of using AHCI over ATA. At the moment my install is on ATA but I would prefer to get it working on AHCI if possible. Do you think this is something I should be bothered about?

Also if anyone can point me in the direction of the driver I need to be able to install in AHCI I would be really grateful. Cheers.

One thing I did try was putting in the vista disc which came with the laptop at the point where it asks for the driver. It couldn't automatically locate the driver and I didn't know what it was called or where to manually browse for it but I do think that it is on there because if I try installing vista with that disc I don't get asked for any driver.

I don't want to install from that disc though as that is Vista Home Premium. I want to use my copy of Vista Ultimate.
