Not really into consoles. We own a Wii, which the kids (10&6) quite enjoy.

Anyway, my 10yr old wants an XBox360 as it's what his friends own/play. He doesn't even know about the WiiU (like most of the country) - Note, his friends (with XBoxs) don't currently seem to connect and play together online.

So the choice seems to be to either:-
1) Get a second hand Xbox 250Gb slim off an auction site with say half a dozen games for £200 or less. We'd then keep the Wii as well.
2) Get a WiiU premium pack with an additional game for about £340. But we'd then be able to use all the controllers/games from our existing Wii too! We'd then get rid of the old Wii. So it would be a tidier solution!

Anyone have any opinions/thoughts to help?

Finally, if I buy a second hand XBox360, won't it already have an account set up on it? Do I just "signoff" and create a new one or something?

Think I'm being put off by the number of horror stories of people getting 2nd hand XBoxs, and then getting failures soon after!

At least with a new WiiU you know it's covered by a warranty and how it's been treated!

Picked up a new 360 recently with 3 games for £200. Opted for the 360 over the WiiU as it has a large back catalogue of games and you can pick up some classics for a few quid.

Down side: Xbox live cost and the dashboard

I think your options are,Wiiu,or new 360,not 2nd hand,you will get better value for money going the 360 route,but if as you say your son does not really hook up with his friends then i would go the Wiiu route,newer tech,damn cool tech at that,though still in its infancy.
You do as you say have backward compatibility with Wii games,and peripherals,and you never know,his friends may be as jealous as hell,and some may follow suit and get WiiU'd up themselves(via their parents who would be told how cool it is your son has one,and they don't).

Oh,and i'm sure you,sorry,he will love the Wiiu if you got yourself,oops sorry,him one.:D:cool::p

I think this is the Crux of it!

Your lad wants an xbox, so he can play over xbox live with his friends. But you want to buy him a WiiU?

Why not buy your self a WiiU, and get him an xbox? :)

I'm not aware of any of his mates playing online with each other...

However, quite often they're around each others houses playing taking it in turns etc. What's interesting is with some games the WiiU will allow two people to play co-op, one on the TV and one on the game pad. This of course is something the XBox cannot do :)

Just go with your gut then;

If you go down the xbox route, don't get a second hand one. These days they're fine, but new ones will cost less than a WiiU any ways.

I get the feeling your mind is made up :p

Sort of, but as I said, only having owned a Wii before, I'm not sure if I'm missing out on any valid points?

My main concern would probably be the WiiU isn't going to succeed. eg: XBox360 games seemingly having better graphics/speed than the WiiU. But I suspect there's more power under the hood than we can currently see and it will take a year for developers to learn how to use it. And at the end of the day, it's not all about graphic quality.

Was it for a general household console or specifically for the son? I know you said you own a Wii but I'm not sure if this 360 or Wii U will be for him or not. If it's a general console for the house I'd probably go for the Wii U option, purely as you already have a Wii therefore can use all its games and accessories and owning both I just feel the Wii U is better as a household option. Stuff like the GamePad being another screen for co-op for the kids, also that some games allow you to use the GamePad screen to play the game therefore no fights over the TV.

If it's for the son specifically however I would opt for the 360 mainly because he wants one. Even if his friends don't multi player at all they might do later on, and they can also swap games and stuff or chat about games they're all playing. 360 is going to be the cheaper option also, and since you've not had one before (assumption) there are going to be a truck load of cheap games you can get. If you do go for the 360 I would hugely recommend a new one though - check out some online stores, lots have bundles of the 250 GB 360 with 2 - 4 games for £200 or under.

You sound a lot like my best friend, it's spooky :) He has a son aged 10, and two girls (6 and 3). He's got a Wii in the front room and his son has an Xbox 360 upstairs in his room. His friends don't multi player that often, a little on Minecraft but that's about it. The girls tend to stick with the Wii, and his son is glued to his 360. He actually bought his son a PS3 at one point but it went unplayed as he just wasn't interested in it - might be the case with the Wii U if he doesn't actually want it, just pointing that out.

I'd say otherwise Flibby; You're talking about general household consoles, then surely the xbox is a better option? As it doubles up for a much better entertainment centre (the ps3 might even be better).

The WiiU won't play dvd's or bluerays for example;

i'd just go with what your son wants. For me that's the safest option. If he doesn't use it, sell it and put it towards his Wii U birthday present?!

Looking around I can only see the Xbox Slim 250Gb with a single game (eg: Black Ops2) costing well over £200...?

ie: Only about £100 different to the WiiU.

As well as the WiiU allowing two people to play co-op (one on TV and one on gamepad) I also get the impression the controls are often nicer on the WiiU due to the motion controller?

And I suspect my young daughter will enjoy the games on the WiiU (eg: Nintendo Land). She won't be playing anything on the XBox that I can imagine!?

You can pick up a new 250GB 360 from a high street catalogue shop for £159.99 online or in store.

Check the deals sites, plenty of offers around for the 360.

For what it's worth I have two sons aged 7 and 9 and we had a Wii from launch, the bloody thing barely got used. They both play on the 360 daily with school friends over Live, I think they're slightly addicted to Minecraft :p Might be a different story with the WiiU /shrug

I'd say it's easy, tell your son about the WiiU, what it can do, games it has etc, then ask him what he would prefer, at the end of the day its what he wants so I wouldn't risk it.

Ta, that's a good offer. But when you add on two games, that brings it upto £230!

However, there are deals around to be had from time to time... I think a certain supermarket has one at the moment...

Interesting!

At the moment the kids tend to play more with real people sitting next to them. And the WiiU endorses that by giving them each a screen of course...
