Hi I need some help.

Please keep in mind I have a basic idea of networking.

I am moving my computer, printer, xbox and hub/modem.

From reading a few posts, it may be better to buy a gigabit switch and plug everything in to the switch and the plug that in to the only gigabit port on my hub/modem rather than connecting directly in to the slower ports in my hub/modem.

A) What switches do you reccomend that are not over kill or too expensive?
B) What is the difference between managed and unmanaged switches?
C) I have never set up a switch before, is there any configuration?
D) Do I need a cross over cable and if so where?

Thanks for your help

A) I only work with Cisco switches, not cheap.. i plug everything into my 892-W, desk phone, desktop, NAS, laptop over wireless etc.So don't know!
B + C) managed = configure it yourself.
Both unmanaged and managed will be able to be turned on and switch, but the managed ones provide extra features, qos for example. For a home network, unmanaged is fine.
D) no

In general if you need to ask what makes a managed switch different you don't need one.

If you don't need too many ports the TP-Link TL-SG1005D at £19.99 would be fine. Spending more could get you better build quality and/or warranty, but the performance will be the same.

I have a Netgear GS105 and it performs brilliantly. There is also an 8 port version. You can get them for a decent price second hand and have exceptional build quality.
