I've got a linksys wireless network set up at home .. basically got one PC outside which is connected to the internet/linksys router and one in my room with a USB wireless access point

can access the internet in my room fine

am using Windows XP wireless network connection (rather than the Linksys one.. somehow windows doesn't like that!)

I've tried running the WinXP wireless network wizard on my outside PC , saved config on my USB stick and ran it on my room PC but still can't access outside network ...

vice versa too!...

got my folders set to share etc , don't know whats wrong!

please help!

cheers

Start -> Run -> CMD -> IpConfig on one machine - find the ip address.

Go to the other machine - Start -> Run -> CMD -> Ping ipaddressofothermachine

Do you get replies?

try typing

NET VIEW

in the cmd window - it should list other PCs that can be accessed.

If you see any type

NET USE \\pcname

where pcname is what you see from above

Have you shared the drives on each machine?

Are you running any firewalls which may need the ip address range permitted?

That's where it would be - try installing it (from the connection / properties window you were looking at) - I found it enabled things to work! Read it somewhere - can't remember where!

It should work fine without netbios.

TCP/IP will do the job.

You are correct - but on my system one PC wouldn't see the other 2 and I enabled NETBIOS - an heyho - it worked!

Worth a try - can always uninstall it.

Appreciate that I was just encouraging the op to spend the time diagnosing the fault so as to understand the problem , rather than use the quick fix, which may well work but leave the underlying problem.

yes drives are shared

using Trendmicro firewall on the 'host' and NOD32 on the other.. will have to check under firewall settings :)

ok, nothing under fireall settings to suggest that th other pc is blocked and vice versa...

how can i turn on netbios?

First - are you sure you have correctly conencted to the wireless with the correct encryption key?

Are you sure that those firewalls have been configured to trust the local network? Turn on the logging to full detail, and see if anything appears when you try and ping each PC. (If not sure, totally disable the firewalls and try again)

From ipconfig /all - are both PCs on the same network? Are you sure you are not clashing IP Addresses? Do they both show as having the same gateway?

Values will often be: 192.168.0.1 for gateway, 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 for your PCs.

Ignore netbios and NET VIEW as we need to get TCP/IP to work first before the shoddy MS networking will kick in.

Yes encryption key is fine otherwise I wouldn't be able to access internet from my room pc

some progress has been made.. upon closer inspection of the Host Pc's firewall settings (under trend micro) it didn't have the IP address of the gateway or my room pc as a trusted source... I changed that so now it 'trusts' them and I can at least 'see' my room pc on the outside computer (host) .. however I can't access any of the folders since it says I do not have permission (whereas I should since I've shared them all and made available on network!)

here are a few pics of my network setup:

IP CONFIG /ALL on HOST PC

IPCONFIF /ALL on ROOM PC

WINDOWS FIREWALL on HOST PC

WINDOWS FIREWALL on ROOM PC

MY NOD32 CONSOLE SCREEN on ROOM PC (which does not seem to have any firewall settings)

currently I can't see the Host PC from my Room PC ...

any ideas? please let me know if any more pics would be useful :)

I've already typed loads of this out the other day. Scroll this thread and check my posts. Rammed full of suggestions for you. (Like try \\192.168.1.101\sharename from the run prompt instead of waiting for MS networking to catch up)

Now you have your two PCs responding to a ping, it is just fighting the last steps of Windoze networks. (For example, make sure that Simple File Sharing is off and do we have XP Home or Pro here?)
