I have an Xpenology boxing running DSM 5.2 and i'd like to setup a simple VPN server and after following a couple of guides i'm no closer to actually doing it. I setup the server as PPTP and i've opened port 1723 in my router (TP Link C7) and NAS firewall but when i try an connect either on my Windows PC or my iPad the connection is always rejected.

I'm totally new to all this kinda thing so I dont really know how find out what i'm doing wrong. If anyone could help me out i'd really appreciate it.

Cheers.

First off, ditch the PPTP and configure L2TP instead.

Secondly, when you are trying it from your PC or iPad, where are you (same network as the Xpenology, or somewhere else on a different WAN connection)?

If you are outside of your network, you are connecting to your WAN IP yes? If trying to test from inside, you are using your XPenology's LAN IP?

I'm only trying to connect devices on the same network. My PC is wired in to the router as is the NAS (via a switch) and the iPad of course is wireless.

I've given L2TP a go and this time I dont get any kind of error message when trying to connect through Windows, it just 'Connecting to <I.P>' and goes no further. I've included screenshots of all the relevant settings in case i've made an error.

The IP address I've setup the port forwards for is that of my NAS which is also the IP i'm trying to connect to.

Ok, if you are only connecting from inside your network at the moment, then your port forwarding is irrelevant.

That said, I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here? Are you intending to connect to it from externally at some point?

I might do yes but at the moment I'm all I'm really doing is trying to do is learn new things since this is my first ever NAS and I'm curious about everything it can do.

Come to mention it my brother just moved to Belgium and he'd quite like to use the vpn for I player and what have you.
