Hi guys I was wondering if anyone can lend me a hand as im confusing myself with all the different online articles.

Basically we live in a big farm house and I live in the attic at the furthest point from the wireless router (some speedtouch model). Anyway my desktop is connected via a long cable but my mobile has problems picking up the wireless.

My brother has just come back from uni and brought a d-link dir-615 router with him.

Can I set this up as an access point to boost the signal? If so does it have to be attached to a computer or could I plug it in somewhere on the middle floor?

If anyone could give me a run down on what to do I would appreciate it.

cheers.

edit im on w7

I'd connect the DR-615 to the long cable instead of your computer and have it act as an access point but also route the internet connection to your computer via another ethernet cable.

You could put the AP in the middle of the house but if that is already served satisfactorily by the main router then there's no real need.

You would need to disable DHCP and NAT on the DR-615 and also I noticed some instructiuon to plug the ethernet cable into the second router in LAN 4 position for some reason. There seem to be quite a few people asking similar questions on the internet about this setup.

Get your PC working off the second router first and then fiddle with the second wireless network, ensuring they have different SSID and channel numbers to reduce issues.
