Help setting up Wireless repeater.

I hope I am on the right track and asking the right question here.

Right, I have just typed and then removed a load of cack.

What I am trying to do, is simply have LAN 1 here

and LAN 2 here

But for me to be able to join them together.

Ideally, I would simply use an ethernet cable between the Modem/Router and the switch or second router and sure, this will work a treat, however, for this project, I am forced to use wireless.

Now, I have not tried this before, or rather I did think but never took it further than the thinking bit.

From what I seem to gather, is that on both routers, I need to connect with the MAC, one being a Master and the other being a client, or slave.

Now, my main Router does indeed have the gubbins to let me do that, however, none of the other routers / Modems seem to have it, of they are not compatible.

Is there a very simply "Childs play" guide to doing this, or am I once again peeing into the wind?

Wah, sorry for not getting back sooner.

I am unfortunately in a wheelchair and not in a position to gether all my routers in one place... This is now done.

Right, where are we?

Ok, here is a list then of the routers that I have

1 NETGEAR DGN3500
My main Router. Gigabit Router, Modem and N300 Wireless

2 NETGEAR DGN1000
My backup router. 10/100 though and only N150 however its rock solid stable.

3 Linksys WAG320N
Linksys version same as the DGN3500 but Wireless seems to only do 72K ?

4 Linksys WRT610N
Similar to WAG320N except no modem, but great wireless signal and speeds.

Older stuff

5 NETGEAR RangeMax DG834N

6 NETGEAR RangeMax WPNT834

Both 5 and 6 used to be great when I first used the WPNT as a wireless access point & Switch, but it was connected Ethernet to my main Router ( DG834PN ) at the time.

Other Misc stuff

7 I got a Sky Router here that works.. Its a grey SAGEM job

8 I also got a good old trusty Linksys WRT54GL with of course the DD-WRT Firmware.

And finally

9 DLINK DL-514
Again, I got this many years ago when I bought a DLink router that had no Wireless and they worked great together .

Okaaay.

So, what do I want to try to do?

Ok, well, I have my network all running well. one of the ports on the switch, are going to a HOMEPLUG

I have a second HOMEPLUG to my daughters room, and a third, to my sons room.

I also have a fourth to the other side of this room, not more than 20 feet away.

Yes, yes, I could simply do a cable along the floor under the carpet etc etc, but no.

I am currently using a wireless adapter on the PC and thats sorted that out just fine, however, I have both an XBOX360, the PC, and my TV, all requiring internet access.

It would be easier for me, to use a switch, with a cable to the forth HOMEPLUG I know you will agree.

However, that forth HOMEPLUG simply does not want to play. Its got a popo

So, in an act of utter "Bugger it I will try something new" I thought that I could try this wireless repeating stuff out, however, I cannot seem to find anything in the routers that will allow me to do it????

The DGN3500 has it, and indeed , I can set that up to be the MASTER and I can also put in the MAC addresses of a few other routers, however, these other routers dont seem to want me to do things that way... Whether I am missing something I dont know?

Again, I have NETWORK A working ( PC and LAN etc )

I also have NETWORK B ( TV, Media, XBOX ) also now working but no Internet

I want to simply get the router on Network A to talk to the router on Network B and Let Network B devices talk to the internet.

I hope this post clears things a little without me doing my usual of making things worse

Creating two networks and having to bridge between them is just making things complicated for no good reason.

Agreed.

The original idea was to use a switch and the HOMEPLUG and that would be it, but the Homeplug does not work, and so... Well, you know how one idea kind of develops in your head to something so utterly OTT that you dont realise just how ridiculous it is, until someone else tells you so... Well, I just hit that point.

Check if any of those routers allow you to configure the wireless as 'client mode'.

I kind of am doing that, but so far, I have failed. Its clear that some are not capable of it, but I certainly expected the WRT one to so it, and indeed surely the Routers without Modems should have to, but no... Not found anything even remotely like it.

Or make life really easy and get something like this.

Absolutely possible yes, but surely, thats no different to what I can still do anyway with what I already have?

I already have a stupidly complex network setup as things are.

I wont go into details, but I have 15 PCs at home, running from one ModemRouter and 2 switches on 3 layers of both inside and outside the house, and the network already consists of 2 seperate networks, so this is only going to add a third, but this time via wireless rather than a cable.

But yeah, cable is the best way anyway, and it will free up the Wireless for the Lappies.

I will solve it all simply by buying a new set of Homeplugs to be honest.

Ah, what a weird solution.

now, I got 4xDevolo but 3 dont want to play.
I also got 2xBelkin that have been working with the one working Devolo just fine.
My mum has had 2 Zyxel jobs for some time when I gave her them about 2 years ago.

I have managed to get one back, and I gave it a shot, just for a kick, and the Network light kept flashing as if its trying to do something.

So, plopped a Lappy onto it and lo and behold, it works?

So, I put it to the Media center socket and sure thing, its all now working as I originally intended, but its a bodged job of Devolo, Belkin and Zyxel.

Slow as heck, well 85Mb but its stable and thats all I need really for now.

No, the Delovo is an 85Meg one, dunno what the others are, and as for actual speed, I am not going to test it cos I will only cry and then end up paying out even more.

The things working now and thats good enough for me for now.
