Hello,

I'll try and explain the problem as best I can and hopefully someone can remember the solution!

I built this system about four months ago and found that when I came to shutdown the computer the tower seemed to stay on (RAM Flashing, Fans on etc) and that monitor would just go black. However, the computer would never turn off and would require me to hold the power button in.

After an hour of searching I managed to find a fix for the problem, it was a simple one line registry tweak where if I remember correctly I simply had to delete a line in the registry.

I reformated my computer and have the same problem again but can't remember the fix for it!

The motherboard is an Asus P5K and I'm running Windows 7.

Thank you if any knows what the registry edit was because it gets a bit annoying having to hold the power button down. Especially when I walked away thinking it was shutting down and came back two weeks later to find it on!

Your problem exists at a BIOS level, so forget about mucking around with the reg. Your o/s is unable to tell the BIOS when to shut down. I would look for a BIOS update for starters. After that I would start checking your BIOS settings. The Registry has nothing to do with this operation. The o/s simply asks the BIOS to shutdown and this is the point of failure in your machine. BIOS update and/or reset is in order me thinks.

There was definitely 100% a registry line that I deleted and it made it work. I found it as a fix on a website but I can't for the life of me remember what to search for in the registry.

I already have the most up to date BIOS.

Registry is not invoked at shutdown mate. It's the o/s simply telling the BIOS to turn off the system. Doesn't really help you but this is fact. Registry is allocated to programs that are used when the system is running.

I can't explain that tbh. It seems weird that a registry setting would stop your machine from shutting down. I have the same board as you and never had to touch the registry. When the o/s begins to shut down, the last stage is the o/s telling the BIOS to switch off. It's almost as though Windows cannot contact the BIOS at a low level. Im not saying you are wrong, but a registry tweak is not usually invoked at shutdown. Perhaps at boot, but not when shutting down.

Go to control panel/Power options whatever plan has been selected click on change plan settings, then click on change advanced power settings, when the power options window opens select power button and lid ,power button action (in blue) click on this and use the drop down to select shut down , finally click on apply and your done .
