I just tried to connect my old Sony Discman MP3 player by USB to my pc which is based on the P5B Deluxe.

XP immediately reported a 'power surge' on USB problem and failed to recognise further attempts to plug in the player.

I restarted the pc and the system switched itself off halfway through booting.

Now it won't poweron at all, nothing.

This was during stock mobo settings, no overclock at all btw.

I open the case and the little bit at the bottom of the mobo that usually glows pink when the power is on, is now just quickly flashing blue on and off.

Can anyone suggest what has happened and how I get back up and running?

t.i.a.

Was the USB port wired up correctly? (Front panel usb?). Perhaps it was wired up backwards, can fry a motherboard like that.

yeah the wiring was fine, been using them both for a while with pen drives, and even that jinxed MP3 player at least twice.

Well, probably wont help, but its worth trying the battery out cmos clear. It will sometimes bring machines back from the dead.

Just the same as a normal cmos clear, but do it with the ATX power cables, and battery disconnected from the motherboard. (The use the Clr cmos jumper). Wait a few minutes before putting it back to normal, and trying to boot up.

Dont ask why it can help.. but sometimes it will reset a stubborn cmos. It can help get a PC booting again. Although if there is real physical damage to your board, then you may be out of luck.

Good luck.

I found the problem with the help of a magnifying glass. One of the front USB port pins had gotten bent over and was resting on the shielding, grounding everything out.

The image shows the pin, a bit blurry I suppose. I bent it back out of the way with a pin and everything started again, but that front USB port is kaput. All the pins on that port look ready to bend inward, a bit of a dodgy component maybe?

Anyone think the dealer/Antec will sent me a new component or insist the case goes back?

Just for info, Antec will send the part to fix this to me.

Good service, I'm impressed.
