Hi, this is probably the wrong section for this but I have no idea where I could post it. Currently I have a desk with 3 monitors on it and my speakers are hidden behind my monitors. I have a pair of Alesis M1 MK2 Speakers and really need something for them to stand on, so they can be lifted above my monitors. I've tried looking for speaker stands but they are either too tall or way too expensive. I don't mind if I'm using anything that's not originally meant for support speakers I just don't have any ideas of what to get as stands. I've been looking on Amazon, Ebay and through the Argos catalogue but I can't find anything small enough.

Any help on items I could use would be much appreciated, Also I've thought about cardboard boxes but these are pretty heavy speakers and I don't have decent sized or structured cardboard boxes to support them.

regards -Skeng

Well, how much is "too expensive"?

I can point you towards stands that will adjust from 32" up to 44" and that have a 9"x9" top platform that would be perfect for the Alesis. They'd cost you less than £50 from a "big river" site. For something pro-grade that is tall but stable and that's going to support your £250+ speakers on to then I think that's very reasonable.

By cheap I mean I really want to spend £20, £30 at a push.

Look on the bay for second hand 'atacama stands'

I've had mine for prob 15 years now. Think mine are SE24, big triangular column. There's plenty on there. Built like a tank. Fill them with sand and they sound awesome.

Problem with second hand stands is you're going to struggle to find any that can clear a desk, almost everyone is using the 50-60 cm jobbies for their TV or Hifi and you're simply not going to get a 70+ cm stand new for under £30 (£50+ will do the job though).

Sorry to be brutally honest here, but I think you're having a laugh.

DeathStorm has hit the nail on the head. Conventional Hi-Fi speaker stands that you might pick up secondhand just won't be tall enough. I'll add that the tall rear speaker stands used for home cinema speakers just won't handle the size and weight of your Alesi speakers.

Time for a reality check. £20-£30 just isn't enough money to accomplish what you want new. Secondhand I think you'd have to drop lucky with an Ebay sale on your doorstep or it'll cost you a fortune in postage or petrol. Even then you're going to struggle to find something that will put the speakers high enough to be over the monitors.

You might be able to cobble something together down the DIY route. But I'll bet it'll look like a dogs arse unless you spend a load of time on them. How much do you value your own time?

If it was me then I'd look at this and say I've justified spending a shed load of cash on my PC and speakers. What's an extra £20 in the grand scheme to get the right thing and be done with it quick and simple. Have a think about what makes sense in the long run.

I'm fine with them at home it's just this year at uni I have a smaller room so I can't extend the desk so I just need a bit of something to prop the speakers above the monitors. =]

How high do they need to go? The best solution for on a desk is some isolation pads, they will add a couple of inches.

I have some Universal Acoustics Vibropads under my centre speaker and they are great.

Oh, hang on. You want these to sit on the desk. Right, sorry.

Okay, what about these? LINK
