hi all

my setup is follows (all on stock heatsink and fans)

A64 3700+SD
Connect3d X1800XT 256mb
MSI RD480 Neo2 motherboard
2GIG Geil value ram

and ran 3dmark 03 for the first time and got a score of around 14500....

i was looking at other 3dmark 03 scores on here and noticed much higher on "lesser" cards....

could someone tell me what they would do to improve scores so that they are respectable but game stable.... :)

cheers :D

They were scoring much higher on "lesser" cards, but what about CPU/SYSTEM spec? Or overclocking levels?

How many processes do you have running at the moment, and are you setting everything within CCC (or tray tools) to full performance, with AA and AF off?

What drivers are you running?

3DMark'03 might be CPU/system limited and perhaps the people with other cards have overclocked their CPU/memory?

thank you....

i probably have a quite a few processes running....daemon tools, internet security etc....

do you usually turn everything off whilst benchmarking and/or gaming????....

have not set anything with CCC or tray tools i just ran it after installing the latest official drivers....

please point me in the right direction to get some more out of my pc.... :)

cheers :D

Well first things first, if everything is at stock with your drivers, your probably running with a higher image quality than everyone else, and perhaps some basic AA/AF filtering. You will also want to force vsync to be OFF whilst benchmarking.

Yes, I pretty much close down every non-essential process before benchmarking my PC, but not whilst gaming.

I doubt he would be running anything but the default test, for someone who evidently isn't that into his benchmarking (can be seen from not changing video driver options), I doubt sincerely that he would have paid for 3dMark03, which you would have to had done in order to change resolution.

If he is searching the standard ORB, then the projects will also all be in the standard (1024x768) resolution.

thank you....

so where abouts do i adjust these settings....sorry for being so newbie but i just want to be 110% sure im on the same "playing field" as most people....

then i can start to overclock....

one thing at a time eh.... :)

cheers :D

It has unfortunately been a fair while since i've used ATI drivers (on Nvidia at the moment), just gimme a min to boot up an older PC with an ATI card in it and ill take a looksie at the CCC.

really appreciate your help....

Ok, go into your Catalyst Control Centre (CCC), and find the "3D" part of the graphics settings window that opens. Expand "3D" and go to "all settings", set all sliders to performance, and make sure AA and AF are set to "application controlled".

thank you....

will give it a try and let you know the results....and will also close as many applications as possible....

so will this give me the "standard" to then base other results on....????

i have also been asking in other threads as regards to overclocking....i was wondering where would be the best place to start....cpu....gpu....etc....????

cheers :D

Yeah, that should be pretty much what everyone else benchmarking will be running (save for some overclocking and windows tweaks). Give it another go and see what your score makes now.

As for overclocking, with that system, i'd start with the CPU/RAM, seeing as your video card will be held back by the system and not vice versa. That is a whole new kettle of fish though.

If you want to add me to MSN, then add paradigmocuk[at]hotmail.com

will try that as soon as i finish this work.... :(

but will add you to msn and will talk on there later....

thank you again.... :)

Hi, I'm running a very similar system (A64 3700, 1 gig pair ram, x1800xt 256) and would like to compare results, I'm using 3d mark 05 though - getting about 8000 points (but people with similar specs are getting over 10k!).

will run 3dmark 03 and 3dmark 05 and let you know the results on here later....

Not stock they won't be.

Stock on my system below which is lets say 5 - 10% faster than yours I score 9.3k stock (625/1500) on Omega 6.2's.

Running my card at 740 / 840 (1680) scores me 10468.

But back to the ops original request.

3Dmark03 I have found is almost entirely GPU dependant (when I had twin 7800GTX's I scored well over 30k (32 I think) and upping or lowering my cpu clock did basically nothing. However overclocking the cards gave me huge boosts (+ 1000 points with certain clock increases).

Simply not true, even 3DMark'05 can be CPU limited (in some tests) with a fast videocard setup.

I am not talking about 3dmark05 I am talking about 3dmark03.

3dmark03 is much less cpu dependant (or at least that what I have noticed with a variety of setups that I have had). Upping my cpu clocking in 03 does basically nothing whereas in 05 it makes quite a difference (depending on the GPU used).

Like I said when I had twin 7800GTX's and a 4000+ @ 2.6ghz I scored around 30k. Upping my cpu to 2.8 gained me IIRC about 50 points. Clocking my cards about 30mhz faster gained about 1000 points.

05 on the other hand with a SLI setup showed massive cpu limitation. I gained 1200 points with a 400mhz bump on my old 4000+. So I will agree with you on 05. (although it doesn't make much difference with my single X1800XT)

03 mark seems a bit low, ive got an A64 3500+, and an x1800 XT 512mb with 2gb Geil Value Ram all at stock, and i get 15.5k in 03, in 05 i get about 8.5k, but even with a slight overclock i can get over 1000 points, as CPU seems to make a difference in that. :)
