Help To set up Ps3 Resolution

So i have ps3 for a month now and not able to play it is driving me nuts. I have all cables for it hdmi the other ones as well.

Basically when turn on my ps3 and its connected to tv already with hdmi. it starts wit res 576/580 . how ever my tv supports 1080i/p 720p .

So i go to the display options and change it to a 1080i the screen goes black for few seconds then comes back and it shows the resolution(1080i/p,) but i cant select it and it says it will go back to previous rez in 30 sec. it does the same with 720

What im doing wrong ? i tried two different tv's that support hd/hdmi and i cant select resolution i desire and resolution that tv supports it.

Im so annoyed as im about to sell my ps3 60 gb if this going to continue...

emm i have sharp 37 " lcd and in a bedroom i have lg 22" both hd and hdmi computable.

the 576 is always selected so when i select + 720 the resolution changes but i cant selected it . theres only O button witch says go back and then timer if 30 sec of time will run out ir will go automatically to a 576.

well try it on auto and it set it self on 1080i will ps3 handle gta4 and blueray movies on that rez? it should do i think ?
