Hi guys, while im currently waiting for my pennies to mount up so i can grab an i5 gaming machine i am using an old Advent pc with a p4, 1 gig mem and, the only exotic thing in here, a 6600gt (128mb agp)

Now i know a miracle with this machine is probably unlikely, but what im looking for is any ideas on how to give this machine a speed increase (if possible)

Heres some screenies taken from CPU-Z / Everest
any ideas will be appreciated, thank you :)

Speed increace in gaming or just general windows/apps - it would certainly benefit from another gig of ram... should make XP a bit snapier for general use.
Other than that I wouldnt throw any more cash at it.

For gaming mainly, it runs cod4 on lowest settings but its has this infuriating little pause every few seconds, kind of like having lag. apps seem ok with it, some things take a good while to load but that's expected with a sys this age i suppose :(

As soon as i get to around end of jan - mid feb ill have enough for a proper build and be able to put this back in the cupboard i found it in :)

have you tried tidying up what starts on boot up and the services that are running ?

yeah have reduced the startup to only the essentials, nothing 3rd party boots with it. tried cleaning the registry, general tidy-ups, removing unwanted apps and so on. and while i can get a little speed out of windows itself i dont think i can push it any further that way, possibly OC'ing the gfx or cpu seems, to my mind, the main way of getting anything more out of this.

Thanks guys ill try that :)

would an overclock of either gfx card or cpu be out of the question? it is on a stock intel cooler though? but temps are fine at present levels, high 30's to mid 40's under load
