im looking for a new monitor.
around £140-£180 to spend on it.
(also going to change graphics card from 8800 gts to something aarounf £150-£200 but undecided on what yet).

Use monitor for web browsing, ms office and yes I do play games, though last game I bought was mass effect 2. Have xbox360 for really intensive games like GTA IV and Just cause 2, though I still would like the ability to play detailed games on my PC sometimes too.

I also watch catch up TV/movies at times.

should I consider

HDMI and full HD
60 hz v 120 hz (can cards in my budget put out 120fps)
contrast ratios

I still will use the PC as a desktop/tower and I am thinking of 22" or a 24", I sit close as you would at work and the screen needs to be viewable for long periods of time.

What do you think?

any chance you could stretch to £220? I'm asking because there's the Viewsonic VP2365wb for that price which uses an IPS panel so the image quality is better as well as viewing angles.

for your considerations, 60hz vs 120hz is irrelevant due to your budget (except maybe the Samsung 22" but it's quite old), also since you don't play games on PC too often it will likely be a waste especially since 120hz monitors shine more in multiplayer than single.

Looking at contrast ratio's is pointless as 99% of stated contrast ratio's are absolute BS (highest TFT central has gotten on any monitor is ~3300:1 with dynamic contrast)

If I was you i would upgrade your graphics card to this 1 and put the saved money towards a better monitor..

A very good graphics card that will be a suitable upgrade from what you have now and do everything you need from a card easily. It's a bargain price right now.

This would mean 120HZ would be something you could then afford. Something like this..

Or the 24" Benq model.

If you want to keep on a tight budget then get the 5850 graphics card and go for a good 22" monitor.
This is an Excellent monitor (I own one) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-045-DE&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=
You should be able to get them both for a little over £300 now so that's within your budget. (and almost £150 less than what I paid for the 2 items a little over a year ago)

I also think your priority of spending more on your graphics card than on your monitor isn't really that wise. Your monitor is what you sit at and have to look at all the time you are on it. A good monitor with a picture quality you enjoy every time you turn it on is really important and as I have pointed out you can get very high end graphics performance for much less. Look to spend as much as you can on your new display. :)

Check out this fantastic LED monitor - its within your budget and 99% of the 50 odd people who left a comment on it gave it 5/5!

WOW I like the look of this one

Yeah I own one myself and it is a fantastic monitor!

I've owned a few 1080p LCD monitors and this one is definitely the best one so far - no dead-pixels and hardly any backlight bleeding.

The brightness is so bright on this monitor due to the LED backlight that I actually have to switch the monitor to Economy mode and even then its is still very bright.

Its also very energy efficiently and only draws around 14W when switched on.
