Every faith in these forums, but I think my HDD is scragged on my laptop. XP home installation

When I attempt to boot, get BSOD "unmountable boot volume". Booting from XP disc and using the recovery console I have tried chkdsk /r, but it stalls after 41% and I get "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" . I am assuming that my HDD has failed.

Anything else anyone can suggest?

Thanks

Right,

fixmbr didn't work. Ran Hitachi driver fitness test, and it comes up with "defective device. component failure" so I suppose I am up a certain creek without a means of propulsion.
