I need to update my ATI drivers (currently on 11.5) ready for BF3 but need your advice. I've read the sticky here but some of the links are very old.

The ATI guide here http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/737-20870HowtoInstallYourATIProduct.aspx basically says to uninstall ATI drivers and software via control panel / programmes and features then install the newly downloaded drivers. Is this all that needs doing? I've searched google for guides and a lot of results are for dodgy looking applications which automate the process or complicated guides telling you to run sweepers etc etc

I'm worried that updating drivers will screw up a working sytem and cause my games not to run properly anymore :( If I create a system restore point before hand will this roll back to my previous drivers and undo any potential errors?

Im running a single 6870, should I update to the current 11.9 or go for the 11.10 preview drivers ? Thanks.

Correct mate, first delete the current drivers then install new updated ones this will ensure no problems in the future! Always best to do a clean install prevents a lot of problems.

In my experience, installing new AMD drivers can be very destructive (had to reinstall Windows)- so I would definitely recommend that you have system restore enabled just in case.

I would personally use the uninstall from programs & features, and then run driver sweeper to clear out anything left, then install the new drivers.

If the new drivers don't work correctly, you could try reinstalling the old drivers (may not work) or use the system restore functionality.

I'l definately create a restore point before I start, just hope it will correct any errors if the update does indeed go Pete Tong. Dont think I'l bother with driver sweeper though, seems its been removed from 3dguru anyway.

Theres no need to go to device manager / display and uninstall from there too is there?

I personally have never had an issue with AMD drivers, been using my 6870 since Christmas. I've always installed new drivers over the top of old ones, not one issue so far. Running Windows 7 64bit btw.

Currently running 11.10 Preview 3 drivers. Perhaps I've been lucky :)

If I were you I'd just install over the top. Should you have issues, uninstall and use Guru 3D's driver sweeper, but again I've never had a problem.

Been installing over the top for the best part of 2-3 years, no issues ever, I'll stick to my way thanks.

Well done. I'd recommend everybody else stick to AMD's instructions, however :)

Upgrade an old driver to the latest version from AMD.COM

a) Note! Before getting started, ensure that you know the model of your graphics card. It will come in handy for several steps in the process. Refer to Article GPU-55 for information on how to identify your graphics card

b) Verify that the operating system has the latest service packs / updates

c) Download the latest drivers for the graphics card from AMD’s Graphics Drivers & Software page. Refer to Article GPU-56 for information on how to use the graphics driver utility

d) Remove any pre-existing drivers / software for the graphics card. Refer to Article GPU-57 for detailed instructions on how to uninstall old drivers

e) Install the latest drivers for the graphics card. For detailed instructions on how to install the latest graphics drivers, refer to:

i.Article GPU-33 for a Windows 7 based system
ii.Article GPU-1 for a Windows Vista based system
iii.Article GPU-2 for a Windows XP / Windows 2000 based system

Confuses me why they went to the trouble of making it so the drivers could be installed over the top without requiring a reboot of the system if it wasn't an intended way to upgrade drivers.

+1 for installing over the top of the old driver. I thought that when installing a new driver part of the process uninstalls the old one?

hmm i had problems with AOD soft. Keepd BSOD my system and had some problems with APP to. Driver sweeper in safe mode sorted it out. Now i got 10.10 pre 3 works like a dream :)

Sometimes if it finds a file already on your computer it won't replace it.

Which isn't good if for whatever reason the old file isn't quite right.

I had to uninstall everything and then manually delete some files in windows folders because some old files just wouldn't go quietly.

All because Rage needed the latest driver just to play -_-

Maybe that's why I did on the odd occasion have a little difficulty, which therefore required me to use driversweeper. If I had uninstalled before then I may not have had any problem, though I didn't think that a manual uninstall was the official method, and that going over the top of the old driver was the way it was meant to be done.

Well I just did the update from 11.5 to 11.9, had a "failed to install" notification at the begining of the install , checked the error log and its for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable, everything else says "success". is this ok?

I tried AvP in DX11 quickly to test and it looks and ran fine but I suspect it was a tad jerky in places though

unless I'm mistaken once you have win7, you do not need to install these redistributables as any application you install which requires them will install/prompt you to install it.

Sorry to bump but can someone explain what the Catalyst Application Profiles are exactly? Are they just driver patches? After losing performance after updating my drivers I rebooted and installed CAP3 for 11.9 and all my games are running fine again but Im not sure if it's due to the reboot or the CAP lol
