currently in the process of finishing of my school folio's (got 3 to do) which are due in next monday, and consquently all my data was stored on my memory stick so i can access my data at home and school

how-ever, it isn't working any more. when i put it in my own PC and try to open the drive through "my computer" it just asks me to format the stick.
right click > properties tells me nothing, the size of the stick etc is just showing as 0 bytes.

any way i can get any of this data back, as 1 of the folio's was finished and the others nearly finished, and i simply don't have the time to re-do them

the only other copies i have are all pre christmas and if i'm honest, the majority of the work has only been done in the last 2 weeks!!

HELP please

hi wingnuttzz

order i would troubleshoot.

DONT REFORMAT!

1. see if you can plug the drive into another machine maybe your pc is just playing up.
2.if this fails then try data recovery software i use getdataback which is NOT free but works very well.

WHAT EVER YOU DO THOUGH DO NOT REFORMAT!

tried the school computers aswell and it didn't come asking to format but gave me an access error (but that will be cause the school computers are so tied down its unbelievable - the whole system is RM and we don't even have the permissions to run exe's etc. I've got admin rights on some pc's though xd)

will look into getdataback - the internet is a great place ;)

can you try a neighbours pc then? if you said you did not get a reformat request? but if the reformat did not come up on the schools pc because it is as lock down as you say it is then it may not of got a chance to get this far.

I say this all the time, but this is exactly why you need multiple copies of your work!

I hope you get your stuff back because I've been there myself but it's a lesson best learnt now - imagine if this was your dissertation or something! Let us know if you have any success with getdataback. :)

yup, lesson learned

gotta love the internet, got a version of getdataback and it works :D:D Found all the files on the memory stick and copied them to my PC.

cheers guys, life savers!!!!!! :D

guess i just re-format the memory stick now and dump everything back on it????

Yep :)

I had to buy the full version of GetDataBack when I royally screwed my girlfriends primary hard drive (thousands of her handdrawn pictures, as well as numerous photos of things) whilst rying to recover my aunts drive!

I managed to totaly scramble the MFD on the drive, as well as the backup copy.
GetDataBack gotdataback! :D

These data recovery apps are much of a muchness. Recuva, by the same brutes as CCleaner, is free and should do the trick.

Have a look at "testdisc"

Free, open source and, in my opinion, badass.

I tried it on my GFs drive first, and it actually said along the lines of: "I can't recover this drive. I strongly suggest you try GetDataBack instead as a last attempt" :D

Nice, cheers for those I'll bear them in mind should I need them.

Plus I lol'd at "badass" I've not heard that for a while.

+1

If the Stick is somewhat corrupt then HAVE PATIENCE. Data recovery can be a very long process depending on the state of the media.

For reference it took me 22 hours to recover 1000 images from a Sony 1gb memorystick due to corruption on less than 10% of the memory.

using GetDataBack i managed to recover all 6gb of data on my memory stick with-in minuites

still no idea what happened, but the important thing is i got it back, lol

many thanks again
