Subject give a hint...

My flipping nvidia raid broke again (see my earlier post on the nvidia driver update issue). Both disks have been tested with the relevant drive fitness tool and are fine.

So I repair the mirror raid and try to boot back into vista - no joy. I get an error saying that \boot\bcd can't be loaded.

So I boot from the Vista disk and repair my install a couple of times - no luck.

Next up the recovery console. After messing around with bcdedit I end up with a system that still won't boot.

Can anyone point me at a guide to recreating the bcd file from scratch as I think this is the last hope I have of avoiding a complete reinstall.

My data is all safe but I would like to save the hassle of a reinstall with the countless apps and utilities that end up installed.

I've found some useful links like this one but they all assume that there is an existing GUID etc. Is there a guide or utility that I can boot from or run in the recovery console to recreate the BCD file from scratch.

Any help would be fab !

Got home tonight and tried just about everything I could think of.

in the end admitted defeat and decided to reinstall (I do have a 24 hour old backup of all my data so that is one thing

Anyway, decided to try Acronis Disk Director to see if I could get at the few changed files since the backup and all I got was a giant 'raw' partition with no data on it that acronis could see.

Then tried a "Ultimate Boot Disk" and still nothing.

So it looks like I will lose a couple of photos and not much else.

Summary - Vista sucks ! The whole problem started when Vista 'auto updated' my nforce4 raid drivers and broke the array. Since rebuilding it it has broken again a couple of times (the last time with brand new disks).

So XP is going back on - ran it for 2 years on this rig without a single glitch.

I guess the time to try vista is when SP1 comes out.

Ho hum....
