HELP!! VPN & REMOTE ACCESS HELP NEEDED

Hello Everyone.

I was wondering if someone could help me with this as i have no idea what i'm doing.

I've got an iMac at home and would like to be able to remote access it from both a mac or a windows pc.

someone has mentioned VPN and remote access programmes but then i got lost and it all went over my head.

I've had a quick google of VPN, and i'm still none the wiser.

I'm assuming i have to pay for a VPN service to remote access my mac is that right? or is it free and something i can do myself?

I've also had a look at the apple website too and there is a remote desktop programme there. Will i need to buy that or something on those lines to, to be able to access and control my mac from somewhere else.

Anyway help would be great as i've never done this before.

They have a mac client, so you can connect to it using a web browser from anywhere (under the proviso the mac is already switched on!)

They offer a free service which won't allow you to transfer files between client & host but if you just want to remote control your iMac, then it's great!
