AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH. My two year old son has just managed to knock a cup of water over my laptop. I immediately switched it off and removeed the battery in the hope of there being no applied voltage present to cause any unwanted currents through damp areas. I've opened it up as far as I can (or dare) and blasted it with a hair dryer. Before I switch it back on with a view to a horrible nightmare potentially unfolding, does anyone have any pearls of wisdom or advice on how I can save my computer? Cheers.

Take it apart as much as possible and let it dry out for a couple of days in a warm place.

Leave it atleast 4 days in as small peices as you can get it whilst remembering how to put it back together.

Thanks for the replies. I was going to try it after work, but perhaps I'll leave it a little longer. Cheers.

In the event that it all goes badly, how could I get my data from my hard disk (with a view to transferring it to a new H2O free laptop)?

You should be able to just pull out the 2.5" HDD and put it in an external caddy to get your files back.

There was a leak in our conservatory yesterday, and lots of water was coming in and covered the floor (of which the laptop was on). The casing of the laptop, the power cables (apart from the plug itself) was in water puddle. Luckily my dad woke me up and I managed to wipe everthing and put everything next to the heater in my room full blast for a few hours.

So I'd guess put it next to the heater for a couple of days.

or you could get your self a Laptop IDE HDD 2.5" to IDE 3.5" Adapter Converter.
so you can then plug it into your pc and backup the data.

you can get them with a usb interface as well now days

ie 2.5" & 3.5" hdd to usb adapter

This is totally no help at all but whatever you do, don't decide to blow dry it!

I worked at a computer shop back in Canada and two co-workers accidentally spilled water on a laptop that was in for repair. In their panic, they got the bright idea to use a heat gun (a big 1600W unit we used for heating up pc panels in order to remove license stickers) to dry the laptop out. The got a little too close and melted a bunch of the keys. We ended up having to give the lady a loaner laptop while we waited for a replacement keyboard to come in.
Should have seen the look on these guys faces when I told them they would have to tell the customer what they did.
