Ok guys, I am calling help from all you audiophiles !

I have converted my Record collection using a Soundlab Pro USB turn table.
The Software used is Audacity, which seems to do a reasonable job, but the output is a WAV File.

Here is a pic of the info for one of my tracks.

WAVFile349MB.jpg

As you can see, I have recorded it in high quality which has resulted in a file that is some 349 MB :o

Now, I want to burn CD's of my records and Nero et al doesn't accept the WAV format, so I decided to convert the WAV file to MP3 for ease of use and also makes them alightly smaller (50%)

This is where the nightmare begins.

I found some free ones WAV-MP3 Convertors on the interenet, but they only convert 60% of the track for a "trial".

So I paid £15 for Smart Audio convertor

http://www.smartaudioconverter.com/support.htm

The output is an MP3, but when you play it in any player (WinAmp, Windows MEdia Player) all that happens is that upon clicking Play, you hear a click and then nothing.

however the time bar of the track increases as though it is playing but no sound.

I have of course contacted the support of Smart Audio converter, but they asked to upload my WAV File....unfortunately after an hour I gave up....it is HUGE.

Any advice what to do now?

Have I recorded the WAV file in too high a quality for any convertor to be able to process the file??

Feeling really bad now as I have shelled out all this money (Soundlab Pro Turn table, WAV converter) and still I can't burn CD's of me old fav tunes on Vinyl :(

I can't make out what bitrate/depth you recorded the wav files at, but I'd have thought any decent conversion software should be able to convert to 44.1kHz/16 bit for burning to CD.
LAME is a free mp3 encoder, and there are windows front-end to make it easier to use. If you're going to use a lossy compression like mp3 then use a suitably high bitrate etc. Alternatively have a look at flac, which is lossless.
Mediamonkey might make it all easier for you - it should allow you to burn wavs to cd (although I think the free version limits the speed it writes to disk at). It can also do the conversion to mp3 or flac if that's how you want to store the files.
Edit: will the disc burning within windows not burn wavs to audio cd?

You really didn't need to spend any money to convert .wav files to MP3, there are stacks of freeware ones about...

Does the captured .wav (full bit rate is 1411.2 kbit/s) files play alright on your comp?

There is a LAME MP3 plugin for Audacity, which will let you convert/save (captured audio) your .wav files to MP3...

You could also try Any Audio Converter, also have a look in the Audio Tools (CD Ripping/Recording/Editing etc) section...

For burning your .wav files to CD, you could use IMGBurn see Here for guides, or you could use Ashampoo Burning Studio Free also see the CD/DVD Burning/Mounting/Tools section...

Thanks for the quick replies guys...I will work through them.
:)

Infact, now that you mention it, when I tried to convert through Audacity, it asked for LAME, but it opened a location finder window....I will download that fdirst and see what I can do.

Looks like I might of spent £15 needlessly :/
Oh well...

lame rocks.

Also, if you are burning to CD, converting to MP3 FROM A WAV is totally pointless and potentially degrades the quality and is a n extra unneeded step. A standard CD quality wav of 44.1/16bit will burn in just about every cd audio burning program. I wouldn't be surprised if nero takes your mp3 and on the fly converts them back to wavs for burning.

Hi Whitecrook....yeah I realise that the MP3 File is a much inferior quality file format, but it is much reduced file size so I cen email some top tunes to friends and archive easier.
I am using the fully sized WAV file as my "master" record file for all my Vinyl, these are large files so I will archive these on external NAS (Raid set up) for safe keeping.

I wanted the MP3's to play in the car

1) Download foobar2k
2) Download FLAC
3) Download LAME
4) Install all of above
5) Open wav files in Foobar
6) Right click wav file, go to convert, click on write to cd
7) Follow on screen isntructions
8) Convert original wav files to flac files using right click, convert, ... and selecting FLAC in the output format window
9) Convert wav to mp3 files using right click, convert, ... and selecting mp3 in the output format window
10) Delete original wav files or write to dvd for archival.
