Hi, i've had my pc running with these settings fine for a long time but recently i've started getting bsods.

Its a opteron [email protected] (290X9)
And OCZ Plat ram @290 @ 2.5/4/3/2/5

My first thought was maybe I pushed my ram too much, so I put it to stock volts at 200fsb - still bsods, then I tryed running my cpu at stock - any everything seems fine.
But I had this cpu like this for ages - and these BSODS have become more frequent with this weird noise my pc makes on cpu intensive places in games/benchmarks.
My pc makes what I can only describe as a crackling/static noise with every fps drawn on say 3dmark 06 cpu test, this noise is always apparent when at 2.6ghz but at stock speeds it only sometimes happens, is my PSU making this noise and dieing on me? I have opened my PSU open a couple of times for braiding maybe I did damage?
Its a X-Pro 460W PSU.

If you've got a spare psu then thats probably the first thing to try.
I haven't really heard much about x-pro, which could be a good or bad thing...
If is modular check the connections.
Can you listen to the sound to see if its coming from the psu?

It's hard to tell, its definetly coming from that area however - near the top end of my pc where the cpu/psu is located.

I wonder if you can move the psu away from that area a bit but leave it plugged in and then listen with it as close to your ear as possible?

There are voltage regulators and such near the cpu which could be causing this.
Also check that all your power connectors are plugged in properly.

Hmm i'll give it a shot tonight to see what the problem is, hope it isnt my motherboard as its a big pain in the arse replacing that than psu.

I know, i'm using a faulty one myself right now because of the hassle involved in getting it out. ;)

X-Pro make superb PSUs. I've heard very little bad press about them over the years. However, there are always some from every manufacturer that let the side down.

The clicking is more than likely coming from the PSU. The only sounds normally coming from the mobo would be squeeking / whining from the capacitors. If you can change one over, or take it out the case for a closer listen, then do that.

I have opened the PSU up twice so we cant really blame x-pro if it is down to that, if it is down to my motherboard is it easy to reaplce the capacitors etc? I'd rather sold some new ones of them on rather than buy a new mobo cant be bothered with the hassle.
