Hi,

I have a sammy TV and have been used to using the plex app linked to the plex media server on my laptop to view my movies via the plex front end on the tv.

I have just bought a WD Mycloud and realise that I will lose the front end bit as the sammy can only view the folders on the WD.

So, should I just buy a small pc with windows so that I can connect my WD to it and view them on my TV using PLEX? If so what set-up would you recommmend or do you have another idea?

Thoughts welcome! :)

If you are going to connect a small PC then you don't need plex anymore, you can play the files directly from the PC to the TV with media player, VLC or even better, install XBMC on it, point it at your files and enjoy cover art, ratings and a great player application :)

Or of course he could just continue using Plex on the PC rather than moving to XMBC seeing as that still gives cover art, ratings and a great player application and he's already used to how to configure the server end of it (which he could run on the PC as well instead of his laptop)

True Plex is great, I prefer XBMC for its audio / raw bitstreaming capabilities. I never know whether Plex is transcoding down my content.

I just read this again :) Here are my thoughts:

1. Connect the WD to your laptop, point the Plex server at the WD files and carry on using Plex to see the content on your TV (bandwidth allowing).

2. Connect the WD to your laptop and the laptop to the TV via HDMI and use a media player to play the content.

3. Buy as you suggested, a dedicated media Centre PC, connect that to your WD content and choose whichever media player/server you want.
