Hi guys,

Have two options specc'd out, but please feel free to suggest others.

1 x MSI K8N Neo4-F SKT939 nForce4 chipset Dual DDR400 PCI-E ATX 98137 £42.70 £42.70
1 x AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+ 939pin 512Kb L2 Cache 90nm Retail Boxed Processor With 3 Year Warranty and Fan Included. 88107 £59.94 £59.94
1 x Point Of View GeForce 7600GS 512mb DDR2 800MHz PCI-E 110066 £82.95 £82.95
1 x Western Digital WD400JB Caviar SE 40Gb 7200RPM ATA/100 8MB Cache - OEM 40469 £24.72 £24.72
1 x Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra Socket 754/939/940 CPU Cooler 74453 £4.49 £4.49
1 x ***** Extra Value Thermal Compound Silver Grease

This would use my existing (DDR1) ram and I have a bigger hard drive for storage. Total cost: £263.81

OR:

1 x Abit NI8-SLi GR SKT775 Nvidia C19 chipset PCI-Ex2 7.1channel audio ATX 105796 £48.15 £48.15
1 x Point Of View GeForce 7600GS 256mb 128bit DDR2 PCI-E 110064 £72.74 £72.74
1 x Intel (BX80551PE2666FN) Pentium D 805 Dual Core 64 bit LGA 775 2 x 2.66 GHz 2MB (1 Mb per Core) Cache 107617 £69.24 £69.24
1 x OCZ DDR2 Value Dual Channel Kit 2x512MB DDR533 PC4200 CL 4-4-4-12 (LIFETIME WARRANTY) (OCZ25331024VDC-K) 80183 £47.99 £47.99

Total cost: £291.00 and that includes new ram (hard disk would have to wait).

What are the views? I really can't decide for a midrange AMD 64 (single core) or the Pentium D.

It's for gaming and digital photography manipulation. I just like a speedy PC :)

Thanks!!!
James

Get the Pentium D system and start saving up for a Core 2 Duo to install in its place. :)

EDIT: That board can't handle Conroes. I'll try to find you another for similar money. :(

EDIT2: Could your stretch for Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-011-IN) at £74.95?

Right,

Well I had to make a decision, so went for this in the end:

Abit NI8-SLi GR SKT775 Nvidia C19 chipset PCI-Ex2 7.1channel audio ATX £48.15
1 x Intel (BX80551PE2666FN) Pentium D 805 Dual Core 64 bit LGA 775 2 x 2.66 GHz 2MB (1 Mb per Core) Cache £69.24
1 x OCZ DDR2 Value Dual Channel Kit 2x512MB DDR533 PC4200 CL 4-4-4-12 (LIFETIME WARRANTY) (OCZ25331024VDC-K) £47.99

For gaming, that system especially the GFX will struggle! Should have gone with the AMD (too late?), because that's a real performer :p

I just got an email to say some had gone out of stock, so the whole lot is now cancelled!

Oh well, guess I have time to think again!

My current setup is:

Sempron 3100+, Asus K8VE mobo, Radeon 9550 AGP graphics and 1GB of DDR.

I want to change graphics card, but really think I should move to s939 or AM2 as that would allow me to go for PCIe instead as AGP has somewhat had its day and prices are going up for cards!

Please by all means spec me something you think will do the job! I'm so confused!

Cheers,
James

What's your budget?

I COULD go up to £300, but i'd rather it stayed as near to £250 as possible.

I'm up for a reasonable amount of OC'ing, but nothing crazy ;)

Cheers,
James

That's very tight (even £300). In fact best option is to change GFX & upgrade RAM on current setup.

Also, doesn't make sense to get a 40GB HD just for Windows  Use the current 200GB (i.e. partition it properly) then add another 200+GB later on when you need

The reason that I use a completely seperate drive is a housekeeping thing really - it's so that XP is on a seperate physical drive and can be rebuilt when needed without affecting data files. I dare say I could do the same with partitions on the same drive, but I'm a cautious type.

James
