So I got my PSU back today from RMA, wired it up, plugged it in, turned it on...Click...Click...Click!!!

My first thought was that the PSU had been sent out DOA (its a Seasonic 1000w Platinum to replace the XFX version in sig) - did the paper clip test and the fan span up briefly.

So I unplugged everything but the MOBO 24pin and fans span up etc etc... cutting a long story short, it STOPS working if the 8pin CPU power is connected.

Does that mean my CPU is dead? likely? or the MOBO? or any other ideas?

Everything should be in warranty but not sure what's bust (last time I sent back a CPU it WAS the MOBO.

I have been sans PC for about 6 weeks now!! I've had to play Xbox, eughhhwwwww

Certainly sounds like the motherboard to me. Can't see how it would be the CPU at that point (although that's not to say a motherboard having problems with 12v rails hasn't killed the CPU).

Most likely some broken traces, or worse, a short.

if it is the MOBO and I have to RMA it, that will mean my RAID0 array will be dead too huh?!

I've not had experience with moving arrays but I wouldn't have thought it will kill it if you're putting it back into an identical motherboard with the same chipset, just make sure you note what sata ports they're connected to though I'd guess different firmware versions could perhaps mess with it.

What is the debug code on the LED??

Yes the dead PSU could have taken out the motherboard CPU and any array of components attached to it.

Detach everything apart from one VGA, CPU and one stick of RAM, remove battery for half hour. Replace battery and test. Attach both 8 pin and 4 pin CPU 12v power cables. Also try switching to second bios.

Tried with the 8 pin and/or the 4pin in the system doesnt do anything (lights are on on the mobo), i could only get it to "power on" without the CPU power connectors attached?? which i thought was pretty weird!

Not at home at the mo, but will check again later if an LED number comes on - i'm sure i don't recall seeing one though - otherwise i would have googled it lol

thanks for the help

A distinct possibility, It happened to me a few years back. Plugging the Raid array into the identical replacement board resulted in a BSOD. Safe mode didn't work either as it needed the raid drivers to boot. That was with winXP though, you may be lucky. :)

Ok no LED numbers, but the LEDs that are lit are (on the right hand side):

CPU_LED - Red

Then in green either
DRAM_AB or PCH1.5
And
VSA or VCORE

(Any ideas? Remember it only does anything without the COU power attached)
