Hi

I have a macbook and am finally getting a monitor.
It'll be used mostly for web design and editing photos.
Would also be nice to put the 360 on it.
Anything between 21" and 24" that's preferably below £200.

I'm looking at:
Dell Professional 21.5-inch P2210H
Samsung P2450H 24-inch
LG M227WDP
LG W2361V

I liked that the M227WDP had freeview as a bonus, but my number one priority is it's use as a monitor, so wondered which of these will be best for that?

Also looked at the a nice dell one which had a higher resolution than 1920x1080, am I right that this wouldn't look good as the macbook can only go to 1920?

Any opinions would be great as I can't decide as there seems to be good and bad reviews for each! Or if you can think of any others.

The Dell monitors that run at 1920x1200 have a couple of different modes if you're running at 1920x1080. The first is that it will slightly the stretch the image so that it fills the height of the screen. The other is that it will display thin black bars top and bottom and display a 1920x1080 image without stretching.

The best image will be gained by not stretching the screen, so it seems a bit pointless to buy a 1920x1200 monitor, and then permanently run it at 1920x1080.

Save yourself a few quid and get a screen that tops out at the res you want to run at.

Given your uses I would suggest the e-IPS Dell 2209WA. It is over budget, but the superior panel technology means you get much more accurate colours which don't shift like they do on a TN. This can a big bonus in design work where you want the colours to be as correct as possible. Also, the viewing angles are much better than TN and the 16:10 aspect ratio means you get a larger viewable area than you would expect from a 22in and in terms of vertical height, the image is taller than a 16:9 23in monitor.

I have heard of people running a 360 through the DVI and VGA ports and they both work great, though the image is vertically stretched slightly.

That dell is only 1680x1050 - if the OP is particuarly after a monitor that will do at least 1920x1080, it's not a very good choice.

I realise it is smaller than requested, but the quality of the panel more than makes up for this deficiency IMHO, especially in work that requires accurate colours.

Given that the total number of pixels is under 15% less, I can't imagine you would be crippled by the reduced resolution.

I have another recommendation if you are interested. The Samsung F2380 (resolution 1920x1080) uses a CPVA panel and should also be good for your design uses. However, the panel is not ideal for gaming due to high response times. Here is a review.

that looks good
so is CPVA better than TN? for colors etc (everything except response time)

Yes, much better.

It has much wider colour gamut than a TN, high contrast ratio (as tested in the review above) and when calibrated the colours are very good indeed.

Also, the viewing angles are much wider than a TN.

Here is another review that is a bit more basic, but easy to read and understand if you aren't a monitor geek like me.

According to the above review, the F2380 has been displaced by the newer F2380M which is supposedly even better with an HDMI port. Here is a review of it.

thanks andi, I'll have to give that one some thought! really like the look of the F2380M, good ergonomics too
What's your opinion of the Samsung XL2370?
Is LED better or worse for use as a monitor?
