Hi All,

Could you guys advice on which 970 card would be the best to SLI, with considerations to heat, noise and performance. Currently on a single 7970, 2600K and 4K screen.

Thank you.

Ocuk reference cooled version, due to the blower style cooler. Moreso if your pcie slots are close together.

Yip for SLI defo go for blower type coolers. It's a lot of heat and if you go with open cooler aftermarket designs it will dump all that heat inside your case. If your case has good airflow and perhaps a side panel fan that you can use to exhaust the hot air, then it isn't so important. But blowers are the best solution for SLI. They can get noisy however.

Thanks for the advice guys, so my thoughts on the G1 in SLI is out the window. I'm sure there are people with SLI non ref models who can report on the temps they are getting?

Hmm.

Don't read anything in to my commment, but I have a G1, and I was considering (still am but when prices drop) SLI.

Not ideal maybe, but it wouldnt stop me.

My thinking is that Maxwell runs so cool anyway, that two G1's in SLI shouldnt be too much of an issue.

If you don't mind, what's your max temp you are getting now? I got a ref 7970 no overclock, and I hit an average of 90c in anything I play. Anything lower in SLI with the same noise levels would be acceptable for me.

depends on your case, i have a high airflow case and lots of high quality case fans, so i wouldnt be too concerned about the g1s personally, but ive never sli'd so i dont know how bad it can get in there. ref design is the safe option it seems

max i have seen on my 970 is 70deg and the g1 is supposed to be cooler than mine

Got a corsair graphite 760T. When gaming I have four notua industrial fans pulling air into the case on a H110 AIO cooler, with 1x140mill as exhaust.
I think this would have to be a trial and error process as I would rather not go with ref designs right now. :-(

To be honest. I dont measure! :p All I know is it runs cool.

I did have two 670 WF's in SLI and they run super hot and loud together, but one was cool.

Cheers for all your input guys. Regarding the 670 WF SLI, I think I would have to take your word for it and use it as some sort of bench. Anybody got any idea how these 970 ref models compare to 7970 MSI ref models in terms of noise levels? I know I would have to factor in double the noise in my situation?

I'm on older 780's which are windforce cooled models, now my board only has a one slot gap between the cards which isn't ideal with this type. I've seen temps as high as 85c on the top card. More often mid 70's. Bottom card rarely gets higher than 60c. I'm also using a 1-1 ratio custom fan profile, 50% fan speed at 50c etc. The 970's are cooler running, but in any sli setup the top card will run warmer than the bottom one.
