Hi Guys

So I've thought about replacing the stand my monitor is using now, and replacing it with these

*competitor*

Which are fairly cheap for what I need,

Anyway, I want to mount this to my Glass Desk, Its a frosted glass desk from Ikea/Argos and is about 1CM Thick, do you think it could support one 23 inch Packard bell Viseo 230WS (4.2KG ish) or will it just shatter?

I'll be looking to add another monitor later on

I'll also try to find some sort of image of the desk if needed

It has little to do with the weight. The sheering force of a even the slightest knock could cause the desk to explode. Oh and I do mean explode. Toughened glass explodes into thousands of tiny cubes when it break.. What you could do is make a metal and rubber sandwich and clamp that to the desk with the stand to spread the load away from the edge of the table glass. However if it was me, I wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't use that type of stand if I were you. The clamping system basically puts all the weight on what looks like two bolts that screw in from beneath. At the very least you'd wa the weight distributed over a few inches square. I think this stand is more for wooden desks where a point load makes little difference.

If I had two monitors and got given that stand I'd at least look at adding some form of soft shim in either side of where it's clamped. Maybe a cloth felt or something.

Saying that though 1cm thick glass would be quite tough so you never know.

1cm of professionally toughened glass would be.....1cm of cheap argos/ ikea stuff wouldnt be.
I bought my brother a small glass stand from argos before xmas, simple 3 tier thing. All he done was dropped his xbox control on it and it smashed.

@OP: Id personally get a wooden desk, or get your desk toughened further by laminating it, though this would probably be the same cost as a new wooden desk.

I have worked with, and toughened glass. Properly toughened glass 10mm thick, you run into and it wouldnt break.

Stuff from argos??? Not sure, does it have a sticker on it anywhere, or a kite mark you could check out?

Just don't bang the corners...........that'll make a mess :D

Yeah, Its seen its fair share of bangs and knocks in its time, I cant mount it too the wall as im moving in 6 months to uni, So this is the only option really, I have sat on it on the corner for a few minutes at a time and I weigh about 10 stone, I'll get some rubber and try to spread the weight out,

Cant find any sort of kite mark on it, It was cheap at around £80 like 2 years ago, Cant find any other links to it, its a piece of frosted glass on 4 small metal posts onto a normal desk frame, I can take a photo if it helps?

Thanks =)

I cant imagine it needs a BSA mark on it if its for domestic use.

Also the only weak point of the toughened glass unit is generally the sides or corners, weight on top it even in the very middle should be OK, heck I fit double glazing so deal with toughened glass every day, may mate had leant a bit against a fence, sitting on a plank of wood, turned around, the wind caught it and it blew over, landed flat on its face and no damage was done, also have tried very hard to kick in a toughened glass unit, even hitting it with a hammer, only way to break it is a tap on its edge

please note this is the old window units that were removed from the customers house then to be recycled.

Well I'll scratch the cash together and buy me the monitor arm on Wednesday, I'll post some pics if you want of the hopefully successful monitor arms =)

Video please, as you assemble it.
Could get some youtube lols if it shatters in the process. :D

Nice, Quick Update, I just ordered the Single arm as I don't think I'll need the dual arm before uni, and I already have my TV for dual screen. I bought another arm which has a laptop tray attachment as I am constantly switching between the two but have limited desk space =/, Hopefully this should fix that problem!

I'll let you know when they arrive! =P

Good News! They Arrived This Morning (Prompt at 8:30am =P) And I have had nothing better to do this afternoon than to fit both of them!

So here they are,

Enjoy =P
