Hi guys,

My computer simply will not boot, and I've tried everything I possibly can. Could anyone maybe shed some insight as to which component may be the issue here:

So I turn the computer on, it will post fine, when it comes to booting from whatever device is selected it will simply reset, post again, and then reset at the same point etc etc.

It doesn't matter what device I want it to boot from, whether it's a mechanical drive, ssd, or dvd drive. Even usb drives cause the same issue - it simply will not boot and just resets.

As I mentioned, it will post fine, I can access the bios without issue, and I can even browse around the hard drive or usb drives using the bios 'E.Z. Flash Utility' so I don't think there's an issue with all of the drives.

I've tried a replacement graphics card, and no graphics card and it does the same thing.

I've reseated the CPU several times ensuring it's all as it should be, and that the heatsink isn't on too tight.

I've tried every possible combination of the two sticks of ram, in each slot, together and individually.

I've simply concluded it's either the CPU, or the motherboard, but am not sure which. Is there any way to determine?

Thanks :)

Components:

2500k
P8P67-M Pro
AMD 6950

I did install the latest bios with no improvement.

It's an old install - my setup has been running absolutely fine for months, it is just today it has simply refused.

Haven't had the battery out for 30 minutes, but I did clear the CMOS using the jumper with the instructions provided by asus.

As I said, it will not boot from anything.

I have tried booting my ubuntu pen drive, I don't have a windows dvd, but I do have a windows disc image on an external hard drive that I normally use to install windows - this doesn't work either, and similarly even if I choose to boot from the dvd drive, despite the fact that there is nothing in there, it will reset itself just the same.

It was oc'd but obvuously isnt any more. Ive double checked this. It was only a mild oc of 4.2 ghz and has always been rock stable.

Its a b3 board so no sata issues.

I have tried a variety of sata ports and also tried booting from usb too ( without any sata drives) to no avail.

It is simply refusing to boot from any media

Well the thing is I can navigate around my drives in the bios when theyre connected. I can access all of the folders and view the files. This is how I managed to update the bios to the latest version. I am really puzzled.

@Nkata

Yeah, I've tried everything independently, so when testing my ubuntu pen, there was no sata connected, similarly when trying my windows installer external hd, and when I used my ssd there was no other sata or any usb.

@TheReaperGuy

I've ruled out an issue with the hard drive as it will not boot any of my otherwise bootable devices (ubuntu on a usb pen, and a windows disk image on an external hdd)

I would have done this if possible.

Unfortuntately I could only check my external hd, and ubuntu pen drive, and graphics card as the only other computer is a socket LGA775.

I'm just wondering whether there was anything else I could try :/ I don't think it's the ram as the symptoms don't really seem to make sense. The MemOK! test thing said the ram was ok too (not definitive, I know, but it still doesn't explain the symptoms.)

@Lee
The safe mode prompt would come up after where I'm getting to, so no. This definitely isn't an OS issue.

Isn't the sata ports because it won't boot usb devices either.

Could be the chipset, this handles all bus communications I'm guessing?

If only there was a way to isolate whether it's the motherboard or the CPU though - that'd be useful

Ah I see, in this case would a PCI usb hub be a suitable way of testing my usb drives to see if they would boot?

And if so, I'm guessing no boot = cpu problem, boot = motherboard?

I ask because I have one lying around and would rather avoid wasting money on a cpu and sata controller which will never see further use.

Thanks

Unfortunately couldn't be that.

I tried it both with my 6950 in, and also without any GPU - issue was the exact same. I can't see how booting could cause such a significant difference in power consumption tbh.

Thanks for the suggestion though, will just have to wait now :)

EDIT
And OCuk have passed it on to Asus. So it looks like it was some sort of motherboard problem. Thanks everyone for your input, especially nkata. Hopefully they'll turn it around quickly. :)
