Hi people, its been a while since I posted here but I'm pretty desperate!

I've just moved home from uni and when I set my pc up it wouldn't connect to the wireless network properly, it would connect then disconnect and never had a constant connection. I tried a few things, ending with physically removing the internal wireless card and re-inserting it,with a couple of re-boots in between.

This didn't work so I got the belkin n f5d8053 v6 usb wireless adapter from another pc and plugged that in, this is where the problems started.

As i had no internet access it didn't install drivers when I plugged it in, so i downloaded what looked like the driver package on my phone and moved it over via usb. When I installed it it also installed a programme which closed as soon as it opened. This was the start if a whole world of problems, the wireless never worked, it started hanging closing down and starting up, multiple installs of windows on different hard drives later and I'm no where....

To top it off, I just got cold called by someone saying my computer was infected with a virus and if I installed a (remote access) programme he would fix it for me. Computer (and laptop) are now unplugged from the router and their wireless turned off, so im doing this on my phone...

I'm not sure where to start, I ran avg on my laptop and it found nothing, pc is currently in safe mode and laptop is running a startup repair, although I'm not sure what this will achieve!

Anyone got any suggestions of where to start?

Cheers
Richy

I still have a dead pc...

I thought it may well be a scam tbh but it just seemed like a bit of a coincidence, I suppose thats all it was. Just wondered if anyone had any similar experiences.

I still can't install the drivers for this wireless dongle, the install keeps hanging right at the end, I'm a bit dubious about plugging back into the LAN to try and sort it...

That cold call was a scam, ignore it and carry on with your life.....

This. Do you have any other computers/triends who could let you download the drivers through that and then use the usb key/nearby room with wireless connection that you can share by linking with a network cable just to get the drivers?

Could someone confirm these processes (a new install of windows 7 Home premium) before I plug back into the internet, I'm just a bit hesitant...

csrss, dwm, explorer, taskhost, taskmgr and winlogon. Is there anything suspect there? csrss and dwm are the only two I don't recognise!

Cheers for you help

Cheers, I've tried it through an Ethernet cable but the install hangs, even on a clean install of windows

crss and dwm are legit files [unless they happen to have been infected!].

I've just noticed there is two csrss processes once I've shown processes from all users, one using 1,600k and the other 8,596k, anything not right about that?

If not ill plug the Ethernet back in and blame the hanging on shut down and start up on a dodgy driver install

Thanks again

thanks for the help, I'm back on my PC now.

Still not sure what was going on, my computer doesn't seem to like that usb dongle, I've gone back to my internal wireless card, which seems to be working again now. I tired the dongle again once everything was working at it started to slow right down again, wouldn't open network and sharing centre etc. Its unplugged now though and everything seems to be ok.

Thanks again
