[Help] Windows 7 Automatic Update problem.

So as it stands I have had windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed on my new machine for about 2-3 months now, It was the first OS to go on a brand new system if that makes any difference.

The problem started happening when windows wants me to do automatic updates when shutting down, so i proceeded to install all of the 24 updates on shut down. Later that day I went to reboot my PC and found that windows wouldnt boot fully, it would POST just fine and get to the point were the Win 7 logo would show and go no further.

As it stands now I have been able to recover to before I had done the update and it will work, although i am having to switch off my system via power button which tbh Im sick of doing as it is a affecting other programs which wont work properly without the updates. I have read that the problem may well be to do with a third party anti-virus software which would seem logical. I am running Avira and I currently have AVG (ran out trial) installed in my system.

If anybody can give me a solution, any ideas or even if someone is experiencing the same problem I would greatly appreciate it.

It's never a good idea to have 2 anti virus programs on your PC.

This can cause all sorts of conflicts.

I suggest you uninstall one and see if that improves the situation.
 
Set Windows Update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" if you are having trouble with the Automatic updates.
You can then install them whever you want (e.g. not just before shutdown).
 
For what it's worth I'm also having problems - but only with the latest automatic update.

When shutting down it installs 4 updates.
When I next start it up it hangs on: "installing update 1of4 0%"
but eventually says; "failed to install updates, reverting to previous successful windows version" (or something)

Tis very odd - never had this before... only the last 2 evenings (the only time I use it).

I only have 1 anti-virus/Firewall program running (Virgin Media).

Anyone else?

(I'll try the above approach to choose it manually this evening)

Not sure if im missing something but I did this when the problem first came about, and automatic updates still occur whilst shutting down.

Any other advice from someone?

This is currently happening on my sisters laptop from the same updates, hoping i can sort it out.
 
The recent bunch of updates do not play nicely together when installed all at once so install one at a time and reboot after each and this should solve the issue (I had the exact same problem, seen it loads of times with MS updates).

Yeah I had this as well, but when it fails and boots into Windows you should get a message which says "couldn't install updates while system files are in use"
Then prompt for another restart.

Installed a service pack that actually made me restart even if I shut down from the switch and the service pack was installing to my computer and it got to this number and this popped up. "Error C000009A applying update operation 118394 of 335235 (/registry/...)".

Then had to do a restore and things went back to normal before this update was installed. Im now thinking a clean reinstall of Windows 7 would be a good option and then try and install and update every driver I need. What do you guys think?

did u turn off/restart the pc while it was configuring updates?

windows installs them before shutdown n configures them on bootup fyi... cutting power during configuration could make this happen...
 
I havent no, I let all updates and configurations run through. The thing that comes to mind is something has gone wrong and it would just be a lot easier to do a complete format and reinstall windows. This might be a no brainer but should I install 64-bit over 32-bit with these specs?

AMD 640 ii x4 Quad core 3.0ghz
4GB Corsair Ram
AM3 MSI Board (Forget off the top of my head xD)
Sapphire HD 5830
500W Elite PSU

Ill be installing Windows 7 Ultimate.
 
I just did a full re-install of Win 7 and did it the usual non-slipstreamed idiots way: Installed to a brand new drive then installed every update since W7's inception.

I had ...zero problems - yay me!

Did make me wonder, though - if SP1 is a conglomeration of every prior update, why doesn't a fresh install start from that, rather than downloading everything? Thanks gawd for BT Infinity!

This happened to me to and I did the same, which worked fine for me to. I also ran ccleaner and checked registry before before running the windows update.
