I want a new screen.

Atm I have a 206 syncmaster 20inch, its ok, but for films I prefer something bigger.

I only play css pretty much for games, and hence I NEED a 100hz screen.

this is my first choice.

If anyone has any comments, opinions or anything about it tell me please.

Any better screens or similar please tell me.

budget is 300 pound max.

It shouldn't make a difference to his performance really. It's basically a placebo effect unless you are comparing to a particularly unresponsive LCD.

euhm its not. 100hz is needed for a fps game. image tearing is very very annoying in games like Counter strike Source. I know a lot of people who still play on CRTs for this reason because all LCD screens were bad 60hz.

Yes image tearing is horrible and god bless V-sync and triple buffering. But you haven't justified why a smooth 60fps isn't good enough for you. People seem to have some sort of false expectation that a boost in framerate is going to make them some sort of gaming gods.

seriously, play css on a 100hz screen, then play on a 60hhz screen, the difference is insane. I am not talking about playing on a pub server, but competitive counter strike source, where 0.1 second is the difference between life and death, a win or a loss.

I never noticed the difference until I played on my mates 100hz CRT screen. then I went back to my 60hz, and the difference is so big.

also in CSS and most games using the source engine, using Vsince changes the settings, so capping it at 60fps is actually very bad,.

In that case your choices of 24in (23.6in) 120Hz monitors are limited to the Acer (which you link to in your first post) and possibly the BenQ XL24010T (comes out at the start of October - unknown price).

If you can drop down to a 23in then you may want to consider the LG W2363D & LG W2363DB (if you can find them), Acer GD235HZ and NEC F23W2A (not yet released, unknown price).

The ASUS VG236H is also well worth a look, but it is over your budget.

If you can afford to drop down to a 22in (16:10, 1680x1050 res), then this monitor is a good choice.

That is not necessarily to do with the refresh rate or the end result of it. You are comparing a CRT to an LCD. If you were to play CSS on an OLED screen you'd probably feel cheated even on a 120Hz LCD. Having said that - if you want to most responsive experience from an LCD you're looking at the great examples given by andi and also if you can afford it the Dell Alienware OptX AW2310. Personally I think it's a little bit too expensive for a non-IPS panel and I'd wait to see how the BenQ XL2410 turns out.

ok thanks.

I might wait for the BenQ XL24010T to see what its like.

the ASUS VG236H is actually fine, I dont mind paying a bit more if its worth it.

the problem I encountered with finding a good screen, is that all reviews are contradictory. most hardware has similar reviews, when it comes to Screens all of them have different opinions. the Acer 235 got some great reviews, but in others I read the input lag is a huge issue.

btw I will also use my Playstation 3 on my next screen. I assume that PS3 works on every screen if it has HDMI?

The ASUS actually comes out very well in all the reviews I have seen. If you can afford it, that's the one I would get. (if you don't plan to do 3D you could probably flog the Nvidia 3D kit that comes with it and make a bit of money back).

Waiting for the BenQ makes a lot of sense - its not too far away and it may end up being a better deal than the ASUS.

So long as the screen has a HDMI port you will have no issue running a PS3. Obviously, you won't get all the benefits of 120Hz, but it should look nice and run at the correct resolution 1920x1080. However, with many of these monitors there is no audio-out (the ASUS is an example of this)- so you will not be able to take audio directly from the HDMI, another method must be used (such as digital optical).

The reason I wanted the acer GD235HZ is because it had an audio plug, so I could use the PS3 with the screen, and use my headset for my ps3 gaming.

after some searching I don think the GD235HZ actually has audio input :(

Do you have an AV multi out cable for your PS3?

If so, I'd suggest buying an RCA (female) to 3.5mm stereo (female) cable. With this cable, simply connect it between the AV multi-out cable and the headphones (presumably a single 3.5mm stereo plug). This will give you the same audio quality as plugging them into a monitor with sound pass-through and it doesn't limit your choice of monitors.

I only have HDMI cable for my ps3.

however, if that problem is easily solved, I would prefer your option, so like you said I can buy any screen I want.

Cool, in that case you will just need to buy a "PS3 AV multi out" cable (costs less than £10) and an RCA (female) to 3.5mm stereo (female) cable (costs less than £5). Therefore, at the upper limit you would need to spend £15 on new cables, but I would be surprised if you have to spend much more than £10.

Ok thats awesome. going to the shop in 45 minutes, so lets hope they have the screens I want :)

RCA cable, I assume you have female to male and male to female etc etc?

That makes sense - these 120Hz monitors are pretty high-end kit, most high street stores over here don't stock them either. The best place you will find them is somewhere trying to show off the 3D gaming and video features these monitors support. If you can't find somewhere like that - go to a reputable online retailer (OCUK is great, though postage may be a bit costly).

I used OCUK for years when I used to live in the UK, but their overseas shipping is expensive. I will look around, if I cant find anything I will buy online
