I have just purchased one of the MSI 5850 Frozr cards and i'm having a weird problem. I have set up an RMA but I wan't to be 100% sure its a fault before I send back as the 5870 I sent back was no fault found and is costing me to get a refund.

When I first installed the card only one fan was running, The running fan was very loud as it was compesating I believe for the other one.? After a bit of running furmark the other fan started working and has been since to a fashion.

What the card does is both fans run fine until it hits 75.c in furmark then the same fan as before shuts down and the temps climb to around 78.c then the fan kicks back in and both run fast until it cools to 70.c then the fan turns off again and the process repeats.

When I quit furmark the fan does not re-start until the card has dropped quite a bit of temp. Then all is ok again.

With just the drivers installed the fans are very noisy even just in windows I have had to install a custom profile using afterburner to control the speed.

The card also makes quite a lot of capacitor whine even though it states on the box it cannot ? there is lots of buzzing when running fur-mark. My PSU is a brand new Corsair TX 650w and should be more than up to the job.

If anyone has experience of these cards can they let me know if this is normal or should I carry on with the RMA just wan't a bit of input as so far its cost me nearly £30 to try and get a working GPU and funds are running low...

Cheers

Hi mate cheers for the reply, I have made a Video to show what is going on as it is really weird. I'm sure this is not meant to happen but knowing my luck it will be fine if I RMA it like my 5870 that had green squares everywhere.

Excuse my Horrid voice bit of a cold at the moment but it shows what is happening...

Hi, i have the same card, purchased in Dec 2010, both my fans spin the same all the time,
Temps @775/1125

Heaven = max 56 C
Furmark (5 mins) max 49 C

ive never noticed either fan stop and start again, (although untill now never looked) but after just running heaven and furmark while watching fans, neither stopped at any point.
Tbh those temps look way to high.
i would maybe ring OcUk and get some advise, before sending back, as the postage does add up if they find no fault.

Hi, thanks for the input the temps are very high it is now idling at 39.c in windows with the side of the case removed and only one fan spinning.

I rang for some advise on the 5870 and was told its deffinately faulty and should be RMA'd and that was no fault found even with my evidence video so that cost me £20 to get it sent back..

Edit - 2nd fan is now spinning again, I give up it's going back not much more I can do....

Hi moogleys

Is there anychance you can get a friend to try the cards for you in their rigs? I'd help you myself but live too far away.

possible things i would try first tho

try a diiferent pci-e slot
re-install the driver

Are the fans performing normally using the afterburner fan profiler.

goto settings>fan> tick enable user defined software automatic fan control. The just create a graph that goes through 30% fan to 100% from 25 to 70 degrees C

then run furmark and see if they work properly, Afterburner overides any fan profiling from bios or drivers. So if the fans still don't work properly when using this method then there is definately something wrong with the card

Hi mate

I tried the 5870 in my friends i7 Rig and it did exactly the same, that Rig runs a 5970 with no issues so I thought 2 pc's same fault must be the card but nope it was NFF...:confused: Its being delivered back to me tomorrow so I can have another go..

I only have one pci-e on my board, I have tried doing a complete driver clean and re-installing the 11.3 & 11.4 beta drivers both giving the same results.

I have set up profiles in afterburner and unless I manually set the fan to 100% the 2nd fan still shuts down, at 100% the card reaches 65.c and both fans still spin using furmark..

very weird but sounds like a problem with the card.

a lot of people have said overclockers said there card was ok when it was not. Some people have directly rma'd them to the manufacturer with success but obviously this is gonna cost you more money again.

Situations like this are always a PITA

If the 5870 comes back and is still faulty I will be less than immpressed tbh it had major graphical curruption on two completely different pc's and has cost me £10 postage to return and then £10 testing fee OC charge.
I have a nice selection of pc's i'm going to try them all in tomorrow and see where i'm at as i'm hitting a wall at the moment.
I also have a new MSi R5850 coming tomorrow so I will be able to directly compare the two.

I just wan't this damn thing done and get on with playing some games...:(

Hey m8, send a link to this post ... video evidence! Even Judges take video evidence as well, evidence! :)

I have videos for everything even the 5870 in two systems failing.. I will make videos tomorrow and see what results I get. I can test the cards in a number of systems, luckily being in the forces means lots of people in the block with pc's galore..

I'm not after anything but a working Gpu and Oc's service so far has been very good and very helpfull, so hopefully this can be sorted out and I will end up with a working Gpu....

I very much doubt OcUK would mess around with the clocks to test the cards i think it would be a case of install the card run a few benchies and see what happens.

Fair enough, When I first installed the 5870 it ran crysis 2 for about an hour with no issues. It then blue screened and then re-set the pc and after that I got the Green curruption on screen in two seperate pc's straight away...

This is a really bad video showing it currupting and then re-starting I have better just not uploaded them to youtube yet...

The 5850 is deffinately borked I just run Fur mark and all was ok unitl 75.c then the fan stopped spinning and the temp rose to 88.c before I quit out as the 2nd fan did not spin back up again this time. I have video'd this as well to show what is happening and the temps....

The 5870 worked fine in bios and booting once in windows as soon as you did anything like open a folder you got the green squares.

The 5850's fans are both running when booting and are normal in windows its just when loading the GPU they do it.

I have just had a reply from MSI tech supprt asking me to check the bios with live update which I have done and it is current. They say if this or drivers does not fix then the card is faulty and needs to be returned to the retailer.

Update time..

I will start with the XFX 5870 as before worked perfect for approx 45 mins then green and black curruption and blue screen re-starts. I tried the card in 3 pc's all different spec and had very similar results always resulting in curruption and a re-start. Finally I used my spare hard drive and did a complete fresh install of windows 7, installed the latest amd drivers, the card was fine until re-starting after the driver install and then nothing no display at all from boot. So this card is deffinately not "no fault found" possibly it had an intermittent fault and has now given up the game completely ?. I have lots of videos but doubt I will need them as the card seems to be clompletely dead now.

I also recieved the replacement MSI 5850 Frozr II and it works perfect, both fans spinning from first install, No whine at all and a Max temp of 61.c in furmark after 30 mins, both fans run all the time. :D:D Happy days.

Just need to get the two faulty cards returned for a refund and claim back my £44 in fee's and return postage..

A video speaks a thousand words and clearly shows the 5870 not working and the 5850 working as expected..

Time to game............... At last..

The Replacement MSi 5850 is running perfect not a hitch. I left it running furmark for approx an hour and it hit a max of 62.c and both fans span all the time.

Think I spoke to soon new 5850 is buzzing like mad now after 45 mins gaming. I think I will DSR this one and go for something else.......:(
The noise is too annoying to put up with...

I'd seriously start looking at your PSU, the chances of you having that many faulty cards are pretty slim.

I tried the two faulty cards in other machines with the same results. Psu is a brand new TX 650 and only the Msi cards seem to buzz.. ? I borrowed a 5970 last night and that ran fine with no buzzing. Having a scan of Google it seems quite a lot of cards buzz and its not a fault just annoying. Apart from the buzzing the card runs perfect.

Give it time to settle down my 5850 used to make strange noises but settled down after about 3 weeks.

The Pc is running perfect now so it is staying put.. Apart from the noise its a cracking card and after setting up with afterburner the fan is silent even when gaming and the temps remain under 50.c

A lot of hassle to get to this point but it was worth it, or it will be when I get my refunds as so far this one 5850 owes me around £450....:D
