Help with 7990 setup

Hi guys,

Been considering getting water cooling for my 7990 for a while, but was concerned that my card was actually dodgy. After a lot of work and some very helpful advice, I am now able to control the temps on air, so confident that water cooling will be very beneficial to me.

To start, I am clueless. When I say clueless, I mean literally. I have always been scared to death of water cooling.

So anyway, I don't know how to set them up, what parts are good to use, how much it's going to cost (all I know is that it costs a fair bit). Any slight knowledge I have, has come from reading bits and pieces here.

To note, I am not interested in water cooling my cpu at the moment, it's purely for cooling my gpu. I suppose I can always add cpu cooling to it later. (it runs cool enough with Alpenphonn K2 Mount Doom, just want to sort out the pressing issues right now, which is the 7990).

If some nice people could point me to a mixture of cost effective solutions and high end solutions, so I can gauge what I wish to do. I will be eternally grateful.

Depending on cost of the solution I wish to take, it could be an immediate purchase, or one I may tackle after the Christmas period is over with. Either way, I owe it to myself to do it, considering all the hassle I have had to get my cards temps at the level they are now. For reference I am using the Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced Full Tower Case

i think you can fit a 360 rad in the top of your case (not 100%) on this. That should be enough for your 7990 unless your wanting the fans to run at really slow speeds. so you will need.

To keep it simple i would go with a pump+res combo so then you have minimal tubing.
A lot of these pieces are personal preference as they pretty much do the same job (fittings especially) so have a look and see which ones you like the look of.. or cheapest
fan wise you should be looking at scythe gentle typhoons or corsair sp quiet editions as they have high static pressure which is good for pushing air through your rad.
Compression fittings are recommended and you need 2 of these for each component. So 2 for pumpres combo 2 for gpu 2 for rad.

I believe you are correct and a 360mm rad can go in the top. (Sure I read it somewhere). Thanks for that, I will have a look through and see what I can pull together.

The words "keep it simple" are music to my ears by the way. I am not looking to have a scale version of spaghetti junction. I want to just get as effective cooling as possible without over complicating things. Especially for my first attempt at it.

I've currently got one 7990 in my pc on an EK block (with 360/240 rads and the cpu in the loop) and one in another rig using an Aquacomputer block with a 360 rad to itself. Temps are around 35-44°C on the cores when mining/gaming depending on room temps and clocks/voltage with either card.

You'll have to look elsewhere for one of those as OcUK have none at the moment. In fact, there's quite a shortage of 7990 blocks all over.

That setup you posted there is around £50-£100 less than I thought I would have to pay to be honest. I may well have a check at my bank account. Not sure if I can get it this side of Christmas due to pay day being messed up because of Christmas holidays. It's definitely something I can get very soon though.

I read about the XSPC problems people have been having, will be going EK I suppose.
