Currently looking at:
-Ryzen 5 1600 (£167)
-Gigabyte GA-AB350 gaming 3 motherboard (£87)
-asus GTx 1060 6GB turbo (£260)
-Team Group dark 3000Mhz 2X4GB ram (£93)
-EVGA 450W power supply (£38)
-toshiba 1TB internal HHD (£37)
-kolink luminocity RGB case (£48)
then about £150 for monitor, operating system, keyboard+mouse and wifi card etc.

looking to keep below £900 but would like to hear any feed back on what may be worth changing. primary for gaming use but potentially other uses when at uni so ryzen looked a better choice for both forward compatibility and for anything but gaming but willing to swap if a major difference is made. preferably trying to keep as future compatible as possible for future upgrades.

Thanks in advance

unless you're able to get windows with student discount, £150 for windows and all the peripherals is not possible. windows at standard pricing is already £100
might want to consider getting second hand components to maximise bang-for-buck

The only thing i dont like on that list is the case, i know its your choice but its more bling over function. I know them lights are like a moth to a flame to most people but the case is quite noisy and does not have much wiggle room on the other side for cable management.

good to know about the case. i was mainly looking for the most fans includes for the price and am not particularly attached to the choice, any lighting was a bonus. any suggestions for cases with a good amount of space(preferably with a psu shroud) and quiet under £50?

Under £50 not really, there is sweet as hell cases out there though... be quiet pure base 600, nzxt s340 (if you can afford a little more get the elite) phanteks p400 (does have a small bit of rgb on the case itself) there is man many more to chose.. just google something like "best mid tower case 2016/2017" and u may get some ideas.

some places online have keys for as little as £5 so that was my pricing i was going off.
these are grey keys, they may work one day, but a few months down the line, ms can block them. these are usually obtained via msdn and then sold on at a profit. if activated too many times then it gets blocked. depends on how greedy the seller is, i guess

I have had a few of them, never gone off yet... I might be just lucky :)

good to know on the key front may reconsider that option but if it works that extra £90ish can go somewhere else useful. i will give that some thought. what are your thoughts on the zalman Z3 cases. they seem to have good reviews and 3 fans seems good to me?

@chaor613 if you want to take a punt on a £5 key, then here's a build without windows
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £908.50 (includes shipping: £14.70)

basically the same build as above, just with the ryzen 1600 rather than the 1300.
also included hdd already.
only drawback is that there's only 8gb ram, but the mobo has 4 ram slots, so upgrading in the future will be to drop in another 2x4gb sticks to get 16gb ram.
this will net you a very capable system.

the kolink aviator in my spec also have 3 red led fans (not to mention that it's cheaper than the z3).
the z3 has been around for ages as well, so their interior design is a bit dated

thanks for the help. will have a look at 2nd hand parts but dont think they really exist for the ryzen stuff yet. case looks good too. everything looks good with that.

once again, thanks for your time. much appreciated

correct, they don't just yet, if they did, they'll be close to retail pricing.
i was thinking more along the lines of a 4790k/z97/16gb ddr3 combo. this would probably cost less than the 1600/b350/8gb ddr4 combo.

was mainly looking for a rig that i could easily upgrade in the future if needed, hence ryzen. will have a look at older intel stuff though in case anything good pops out. thank for the advice

Recommend you get a video card with a good cooler such as in Tamzzy's spec rather than blower-style like the Asus Turbo.

The Z3 case has three fans but they spoiled it by placing the front fan/s in front of a small-holed grille. The Kolink also has the front fan/s on a grille, but behind it, and the holes are larger. It doesn't have any dust filters though. If you could find a little extra, one of the best £50 cases out there is the Fractal Design Focus G (in ATX and micro-ATX versions):

@chaor613 the 4790k bundle will last a few years yet, before any need to upgrade. of course ryzen 1600/b350/16gb ddr4 combo will have better longevity - its newer and has more cores, but it's also relatively more expensive than a 2nd hand 4790k bundle.
but you need to offset this as the ryzen bundle bought new will have warranty whereas a second hand bundle won't.
tbh, the part most often upgraded first is the graphics card :p

@Danny75 that's my favourite midrange matx case to spec if the budget allows. guess it depends on @chaor613 lol
