Hello everyone.
A little help would be much appreciated. What do you think of these specs, it'll be in a Lian Li V350B.
(Its being build for someone else who wants doesn't want to OC and will game at 1920x1080 without AA and wants it to last years..... )

Intel Core i7 860
8GB (2x4gb) Corsair DDR3 1333
ASUS P7H55-M/USB3
1GB eVGA GTX 460 (might have to be a XFX 5770 as pushing the budget)
60GB Corsair Force F60 SSD 2.5"
1TB WD SATA3 3.5"
Sony AD-7261S-0B DVDRW
Silverstone 500W ST50F-P
Win7 Home Premium 64bit
(Above comes in at: £888)

Main questions:
  • Will the PSU be enough and if not is there a better one (I want quiet and must be modular at a similar price)
  • Will the SSD work well on the SATA3 interface or is it going to be limited to similar to SAT2
  • Would I be better using a SATA3 HDD as primary and saving from the SSD (maybe a SATA3 raptor?)

Come up with the below, does he require 8gb of ram, 4gb will be enough.

Comparison between the 2 cpu's:

if your getting a i7, then get a socket 1366 i7 9** series.

for gaming a i5 760 is about as good as it gets, so have come up with this for you.

A single GTX460 1gb will be good enough, or there is currently a GTX470 for £180 this weekend only.

It will all fit in your existing lian-li case too.

@RJC - Never mind, you removed the case after I posted. Good spec ;)

@O.P - The spec RJC posted will be better for the money, a p55 mobo and a core i5 760 makes more sense than a h55 mobo and a core i7 860

@RJC - Think he already has a case so the silverstone won't be needed.

Already sorted!! :D

As I stated in the first line - this will be going in a Lian Li V350

This limits the motherboards at the price somewhat. As for the i5 rather than i7 I have told him that he probably won't notice the difference, but he's one of those "I want i7 because its the best" people, which is why he is also shouting that he wants 8GB and USB3.

Could anyone help with my questions below the spec rather than rebuilding my spec (sorry I know thats more fun :) )?

Tell him for gaming a i5 760 is better, heres a comparison between the i5 760 vs i7 860 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/191?vs=108

That psu will do the job.

the SSD wont be slowed by the interface.

using a SSD to run windows and the games, then a large'ish harddrive for storage is the best option.

From some of the parts you have listed, you buying from a place in Portishead?

The SSD'S wont be slowed by the interface, I use the one specced in my system below and so far pretty impressed with the performance.

My post above shows the comparison between the 2 cpu's.

If he wants the i7 then go the full hog and get the 930 and triple channel memory!! :)

Hi Stulid,
I know the SSD won't be slowed but the interface, I was more wondering if it would benefit from the SATA3 interface or whether we'd get the same performance from a SATA2 interface?

So apart from the CPU you wouldn't really suggest changing anything?

RJC,
I would be specing him a 930 if the budget allowed for it, but look at the price diffence between the ASUS P7H55 and the cheapest X58 mATX board. As I said in the first post I might have to get the 5770 to keep it within the budget anyway.

*edit*
From what I've seen the difference between the 860 and 930 is minimal unless you are planning to use multiple GPUs anyway?

I wouldn't change anything else apart from the cpu and change the motherboard to a P55 chipset one.

Did you see my little question at the bottom of my last post?

Wasn't planning to - not sure where you're talking about, I don't go that way much. Guess its coinsidence.

What advantage will a P55 provide if we aren't using raid, OCing and using a single GPU and want USB3? Baring in mind that it must be a mATX board.

Difference is very minimal, only real good thing regards the X58 is the amount of PCI-E lanes when running multiple gpu's, this does require any extra chips on the chipset todo unlike the P55 chipset.

Check your mail.

If I remember correctly the H55 chipset pci express lanes bandwidth is like half a normal chipset? 250mb vs 500mb each.

Thanks for your email - slightly more than other places.

OK so building the same spec as I originally posted (has to be i7 for time being, 6/8GB and mATX) at same price or better what would you do?

If i got a ASUS Gene or some sort would I miss the SATA 3?

Extra £20 over your £888 budget gets a proper i7 and a good X58 Matx motherboard and 6Gb of ram.

you wouldn't miss the SATA3.0 interface with that SSD, a Crucial C300 64Gb you probably would, I know I do!!!
