Help with a computer problem please

Hi I have just finished putting together a new computer but I have not managed to get it to work yet, the problem being that when I plug the monitor into the graphics card the monitor will go straight into Power saving mode. The only way I can get a display is to use the onboard graphics on the motherboard.

The setup is:
MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Coolermaster 1000w PSU
Gainward GeForce GTX 580 "GOOD Edition" 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Im limited on what I can test having no spare Graphics cards to see if the PCI slot is working, I have tested with another screen (a TV using HDMI slot on the card) giving the same none image result.

Any help would be great.

Have you got the power cables connected to the GPU from the power supply and set PCIE as first display in the bios ?
 
yes the power connectors are connected and Im 90% sure I changed the PCIE to first display but going to double check to make 100% sure on that
