I'm looking to make a new machine, finally.
So for a starting point I need to figure out which CPU to aim for.

Basically I'm looking for something that can be overclocked, used for gaming with about a max £200 budget.

I have started looking at 950 now, if I'm gonna make a machine that's gonna last me a good few years, I might as well get the best I can.

Silly question, is the 950 as overclockable as the 930?

If you plan on overclocking with air cooling only - then I would suggest just sticking with the slightly cheaper i7 930. The i7 950 is a better chip due to the higher multiplier - but for overclocking with air cooling both chips will be limited by heat at the same point.

However, if you plan to watercool then the i7 950 will allow you to hit a higher maximum overclock.

I'm going to suggest something different. And when someone specifies a particular budget it usually means they want to spend UP TO or AROUND. With that in mind how about:

AMD phenom II x4 955 3.2 - 117.49

AMD phenom II x4 965 3.4 - 128.98

AMD phenom II x6 1055t 2.8 - 154.99

The 955 and 965 will perform perfectly well for apps and gaming. The 1055 at the moment as most games utilise 2 cores [and with only some of the latest making use of 3/4] performs slightly worse in gaming, but performs better with apps, runnning multiple programs at once, video encoding, photo editing etc
