Hey, so my uni mate owes me 400 quid, we have a joint account that our rent and bills come out of and we put £1000 in every couple of months, we are due to put in our £1000 each, but as he owes me £400 can I just put in £600? excuse my stupidity but does that work out even? because that would be the same as taking 400 out of the joint account which is made up of both our money so surly im taking 200 of his money and 200 of my own?

Cheers

As everyone has said. Unless he puts in £1400 the account would be £400 short.

Ideally I would say for you all to just pay in your £1000 like normal and have him pay you the £400 in a separate transaction. Makes it easier if you end up looking back at your records at a later date.

I agree but for some reason he wont just send me the 400, there wont be any issues with the account going into debt as the 2000quid total we put in more than covers our bills, but I just wanted to be sure that if I only put 600 in and he does 1000 then we are both even.

im just struggling to get my head round it cos, he owes me 400 not the joint account and since we both have an equal amount of our money in there does that all add up
