I have 2 laptops and one of them has been very slow for a while, so i swapped the hard drive out of the slow one for the one in my other laptop which Is pretty fast, and the slow laptop is still really slow, its an i3, 3gb of ram etc, so it really shouldn't be anywhere near as slow as it is, and I don't see how its a software issue as i swapped the hdd out, updating drivers now but i cant see it doing much, any ideas?

I've noticed it's runny pretty hot, CPU z is showing the clock speed at only 900 or so MHz when it should be 2.3ghz.

Also dxdiag is only showing the integrated VGA and not the dedicated VGA. Could it have burnt out/ died, how could I check?

Tried cleaning out the fan?

Might be full of dust and rubbish that will not only make it feel hot but it can also make the CPU start to work slower so it doesn't burn out basically.

Blowing into a laptop fan assembly can cease the fan with fluff, it's best to get into the unit and remove the fan then clean the heatsink fins with a hoover and paintbrush or similar

you don't have to. in most cases it's enough to take down the bottom cover, and use the straw on the air can to direct the air out through the heatsink. of course you have to block the fan, so you don't damage the bearings.

this is going to be an older laptop, not some ultrabook that's difficult to get into, so the parts will be quite accessible even without too much disassembly.

Sadly quite a few laptops these days don't have easy access to the HSF assembly... Almost as if they expect you to use the device until there is a minor problem with it and then buy an new one ;)

I had to pretty much take it apart completely to get to the fan and it wasn't even that dusty, slopped some Arctic sliver in there and it seems a bit better...
