Help with a video editing system

Hi all,

I used to build PCs a long time ago but haven't for ages. I think the last machine was a Pentium 3 :rolleyes:yes, that long ago ;)

It looks like not a great deal has changed on the what needs to be done... obviously all the components are very new but I mean the principal of case, PSU, CPU, etc. Is the same.

I after advice one the best sort for video editing ( and a little gaming).

I've been looking at the intel i8700 with the Asus Rog m/b.

I want to spend c1400 quid. Can anyone provide me any the of the core components useful for video editing please. A little gaming would be good but its main use is 4k video from a Mavic Air.

If it's cheaper to buy built from OC I'll certainly do that. Cheers

Thank you very much for that. I had read the i8700 was a better CPU for the cash now.

The whole reason this is happening is because I was about to buy a 1.6k iMac for editing but started to wonder if the money would be better spent on a PC that I can also use for gaming/vr. Its main aim will be handling 4k video though.

Hi there,

Editing *def* only a hobby ;)

My current macbook pro (2010) won't even play a 4k file....I need something newer.

I think the last suggestion is more than I need but thanks again. A good all rounder is the best way to describe it but as I'm into drone footage, I'd like some power to manage the footage.

Cheers all!

Hi all,

Thank you for the great advice again. I did go i8700k in the end as I decided that I may get a slightly better gaming experience with that as well as an adequate hobbyist video editing unit.

I went i8700k, Asus Maximus, STRIX 1080ti, Coolermaster 240L AIO, modular Cosair PSU, Coolermaster H500p.

I went RGB to the max and I know not everyone will like it (but I thought it was a bit of fun - it can always be switched off :) )

….and don't worry, I realised that I had some of the RGB cabled incorrectly, that’s all sorted now so the colours are uniform, as you’ll see in the little video.

Thought I would share the rig and thanks to the people on here and OC for helping me with it:

Now the comes the final piece of the puzzle…the monitor. The rig is currently attached to 13 (!) year old LCD telly L

I need something better – I am thinking x34a, but then I have seen the newer x34p – but that’s even more expensive. Not sure I can stomach a £1.1k monitor – saying that, the GFX card was pricey enough from my old days with Pentium IIs J

Any monitor advice would be welcomed – I do fancy an ultrawide – are they as good as they look in the pics?

Cheers all

I hope you are aware that no further processor upgrade is possible with your motherboard. If you decide in 6 months that the configuration is weak, you will need to get rid off it all.

My last desktop was a Pentium II, my Wintel laptop a 2005 Dell and my Macbook a 2009 ....I have a few years in this.... :p:p:p

i dont think a 6/12 intel will be weak in 6 months. specially with it having a stronger IPC/IMC then AMD . if gaming is more focus then Video editing then it would be plenty .
Until Vendor road map is in front of me or is leaked then no system is non-upgradeable IMO - CPU there will last 4-6 years just fine

@Colin Bailey

looking good, able to get cashback deal from ASUS UK? hows the 240 AIO holding up? have a custom 360 AIO keeping mine in check at 5.1ghz

also your monitor should outlive your GPU and system easily, so worth the extra cash... is the new version HDR???

would honestly wait a little longer for it, makes a big difference if you've seen TVs with it .

I have applied for the cashback - it seemed to go through - I'll keep you all posted :) I'm not sure if the new version is HDR - I think its 120Hz refresh vs 100 and a slightly better curvature on it.

I haven't braved OC depths yet. On a stock 3.7. It seems much faster than my Pentium was :p

As for future proofing, I gave up with all of that many, many years ago. You think you can and the brands want you to think like that, but in the end stuff just gets old - so you have to rebuy when its at that stage ;)

I fear a trip to OC for a fancy monitor this week - great set of people there :cool:

I'm not sure if that's a good damn or a bad damn but I can say this is by far, the absolute best monitor I have ever had the pleasure to sit in front of. It makes computing, 'special'. It feels like an event, just unzipping an archive :)

I am really thankful for you lot and OC for helping me to get back in the saddle. And to think, I nearly went on a pricey Mac to replace the Macbook. The PC feels like an familiar pair of slippers. WITH RGB :)
