Help with Apple products for a school

hi, a friend has asked me if i can help with the following (only because sometimes I fix peoples computers)

She works at a small country village school.

She want to register some Apple devices to school. But apparently they keep asking for a MDM server.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please.

Never done it myself so I can't be much help but MDM stands for Mobile Device Manager , if that sheds any light on the situation.
Used to be a feature of OSX Server editions.

Not sure if its relevant but I think Cisco Meraki do a free mobile device management option.
