Having a problem with a new pc that i have just built and am not really sure of the problem.

I have a ASUS board (P5W64 WS Pro). When i switch on and get the the POST bios screen it says the 'Primary IDE device' is my DVD-rom and the 'Third Device' is the Hard-Drive. To what i understand the system needs to detect the Hard drive as the primary in order to install the OS, right? The thing is i dont know how to do that and have tried so maybe BIOS configs, but all seem to fail and lead me to resetting the BIOS.

If i set the go to the 'Boot' menu and set HD as 1st and CD, after i exit the bios im taken to a black screen and it says somthing like, Reboot or insert boot device. Im getting really confused..

This is the first time i've built a pc from scratch and want to achieve this;

Have the master device as the Hard drive and cd as secondary. then install windows and partition the HD 60/40. Can someone that knows ASUS boards take me though it please?

Hi, perhaps you have no OS installed yet. No the HD can be anywhere within the list of drives within the bios, If it's a Sata drive then more than likely it will appear down that list after the IDE devices, you an then just set whatever boot device you want to use...

You need to boot your optical drive to the top of the boot priority, put the install disc in, save settings and restart. Just after POST it'll say "press any key to boot off CD-ROM" do that.
