So I decided to get myself a battery charger as I have already had to call out the RAC to jump start the car. The issue it, the battery charger doesn't seem to work.

The charger I bought was NOCO GENIUS5 5-Amp Battery Charger: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/b...oco-genius5-5-amp-battery-charger-230278.html

My battery is this one: https://www.racshop.co.uk/rac002-premium-car-battery.html

Following the instructions, connect the device to the battery (Positive to positive, negative to negative), plug into mains, and select correct charge type. The issue is that the device just flashes on the arrow symbol, and according to the manual, it means the device is too hot/cold, which I think is a load of rubbish.

The car is a MK5 Golf R32, so the battery is located in the boot. I have tried hooking this up to the battery directly and tried the positive terminal located under the bonnet, same issue occurs.

Does anyone have experience with this or similar? Am I doing something silly? Or could it just be, knowing my luck the device is faulty? ;)

Do you have a volt meter at all? If the battery is currently discharged it's possible that the voltage is too low for the charger to want to work.

I had similar the other day with my father-in-law's car, the battery had drained to around 6 volts and the charger wouldn't touch it until I bumped up the voltage from another battery.

Unfortunately I don't have a volt meter. The car did start though, but barley, so surely that would be enough for the charger to pickup?

What lights are flashing when you hook it up? Only the arrow symbol? If so that's the "high voltage" indicator. You definitely in 12v mode, not the 6v mode?

Yeah, I'm definitely in 12v mode and it is just the arrow that flashes (I did try the other modes as well, but got the same result). Although, I thought if it was a solid light that was high voltage?

Ah, maybe you're right. I was reading it as all 3 x fault lights would flash if it was over/under temperature.

Ah if it was enough to start then you had a good 10.5v in there, probably over 11v.

Do you have another battery to try it on? It might be a faulty charger though.

Well, I've tried it again. This time is was staying in standby mode. When it does this, you can put it into "Force mode" as it think's the battery is too low for it to pick up or something. After it goes through its charging phase for 5 minutes, it goes back into standby mode, then switches to 12v for a split second, before switching back to standby mode. I'm guessing the regular 12v is the correct mode for my battery? As there is also 12v AGM and 12v Lithium.

I will give it another bash tomorrow and see how it goes.

Without a multimeter it is hard to tell why the charger is behaving the way it is. You do not have an AGM or Lithium battery so I would strongly recommend you do not use those.

Just to confirm, have you removed the battery from the car to try re-charging?

You could try the repair mode, as this may help recover the electrode surface.

I think it might be working. The only thing flashing is the lowest battery bar, which I presume means that it's very low and charging? I'll leave it for a couple of hours and see if it has made any progress.

Well, I have no idea what I done yeaterday, but today it seems to be charging now. Maybe there wasnt enough contact on the charge point on the car? No idea. The second bar has lit up so it seems to be doing fine now. Cheers for your suggestions guys, much appreciated.

did you disconnect the battery, too ? (per discussion in other recent thread)
had the same issue, just been outside to put it back in car boot 9hrs of charge ... I'll re-programme the dam radio tomorrow

I just used the charge point under the bonnet. Positive to positive, then negative to a piece of metal on the chassis. Battery was still connected. The battery on the R32 is a bit of a pain as it has a metal cover on the top which needs around 12 bolts to be undone. Battery is now fully charged though!
