Help with beep codes on new build

Hi,

Just built a new PC.

I got an MSI P31 Neo2 board that has AMI Bios.

I have finished building the PC now and the system powers up ok and into windows (did a new install of Win XP onto new hard drive).

I can be working away fine but I have been experiencing random crashes every half hour or so e.g.:

- blue screen
- windows has recovered from serious error
- windows explorer crashing
etc.

When I boot up I notice I get a short beep then a pause followed by 2 slightly higher pitched short beeps close together.

Any idea what might be wrong?

I have 2 1GB sticks of PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 (OcUK). I have tried with only one stick in and swapping and just putting the other stick in. Makes no difference.

Oh - and in case it's relevant, my ps2 keyboard has suddenly stopped working as I've been working through things and rebooting etc. The keyboard doesn't work at POST to get into BIOS.

HELP!

Thanks,

Paul.

Thanks Andarial.

I've checked a few of these sites. None of them seem to mention that there's 1 short beep then a pause then 2 short beeps close together.

they just say 1 short short beep, 2 short beeps etc.

the site you gave me a link to suggests memory error for 2 short beeps or 3 short beeps.

i have taken 1 stick of memory out and tried it. then swapped over for the other one and tried it. same problem. i can't believe the 2 sticks are faulty.

Just spotted keyboard, can you try a different keyboard to rule that out?

it's definitely 1 short then pause then 2 short close together. last 2 are higher pitch.

graphics card is working ok - could there still be a problem with it? what is IRC?

i only have one keyboard in the house :( - it was working fine on my new build then suddenly stopped working. i've had that keyboard for a few years working fine on my old build.

irc= my bad typo sorry should have been iirc which means if i remember correctly
any lights on the keyboard when powered up?if not i would beg or borrow a keyboard.
maybe clear the cmos on the mobo, take out battery for a min or use jumper with power turned off at mains

For anyone experiencing the same thing - I have solved the problem!

The beeps were related to the number of usb devices attached.

1 beep for every usb device attached.

I can sleep at night now :)
