hi people .. few problems with new build, all bios related which is why im posting in motherboard section.
today i built my p5k-e / E8650 system .. went pretty smooth, thanks to my eclipse 62 (anyone know why the ide led is so ganked ?)
anyway, kinda quickly checked over the bios settings .. uh oh .. a lotta stuff that i have zero idea wth it does.
i set it to 'should be ok for now-settings' and install windows xp.
updated windows, put video drivers on, etc etc, update my a/v .. play around with font size, winamp etc etc.
i shutdown the pc to go have a quick shower; come back and press the power button and it wont turn on
check everything .. long story short i clear cmos and it turns on.
so now i know its gonna be tricky.
heres where i need the help.
first off i have a bfg 8800 gt and somewhere in the hellishly long 8800 gt thread people have said something like 'yeah it doesnt always boot ..could be you need to set the pci frequency to 101 mhz instead of default 100 (auto option)
so ive done that.
secondly just in case it isnt that - and to be honest because im a wimp i prefer 'auto' -- all the new settings that show up in manual scare me !
my sata is on ide - does it matter its not ahci ? i know ahci enables ncq which people have said is a bit poo .. also this means intel robson technology (?) is disabled -- im lost here
bios EHCI hand off -- enable/disable ??
PECI . conflicting google results .. on or off ?
im assuming PEG port [auto] and PEG port force x1 [disable] ?
anything else that would stop my machine turning ON (no post,no fans etc) ?
i have 3xSATA devices installed, a dvd writer in the black sata port and 2x sata hard drives in the orange ones.
also, sorry for the inquisition but -- i enabled the q fan control thing do i need to install the asus probe now to get a feel for which setting to put them on .. atm only the cpu fan and 1 of the 2 chassis fans is actually showing any RPM (theyre both spinning, connected via 3 pin mobo headers)
and finally to end all the questions ..as my pc posts, it lists all the devices successfully but then just before going to 'checking nvram' (and then starting the winxp thing) it says something like 'no drives found' even though they are all detected in bios and it will go into windows on a restart -- is this something to do with being able to boot from usb stuff and as ive none plugged in ..??

if i get up in the morning and my pc wont turn on, i'll have to reset the bios again which is why im doing the 20 questions now
