hi

looking for a little help with an issue i have please, with random black screen lockups.

i'm running:
asus z170 pro gaming
6600k
sapphire r9 390 nitro
win10

i had a black screen lockup a couple of months back, thought nothing of it, rebooted, carried on.
in the last two weeks it has occurred more frequently, sometimes when closing a game, and in the last few days when browsing web or watching iplayer etc. screen goes black, pc still runs, but totally unresponsive, requires restart.
i have installed latest gpu drivers, windows updated etc.
i have de-dusted the pc and graphics card.
pc has been rock solid until this issue, no other hardware changes.

i have removed gpu for periods of time, i have had no lockups without the card in the machine.
gpu purchased in april '16, from another retailer, OCUK had no stock of gpu or the case i wanted. does anyone know the warranty duration for sapphire cards please, and am i likely to have any joy with RMAing a card that appears to work fine until the random lockup occurs?

thanks in advance for any assistance..

I occasionally had the same issue with a 660ti, either black screen or grey screen hard lockups. It was down to the GPU in the end, not related to drivers or any other hardware. Checking monitoring software it usually happened when the GPU reached voltage limit.

Using MSI afterburner and downclocking the card + increasing power limit was a temporary fix (though it still happened on rare occassions) until getting a new one.

thankyou. pretty sure the gpu is the issue. i'm sure the card will be within warranty, but worried that if it's tested, it will work fine for a bit.
any recommended monitoring software that will help nail the issue down?

Event Viewer might show some errors pointing to graphics card if that's the cause.

Also what PSU you have?

I have a corsair rm950 powering it. All I can see to find in event viewer is notification that system lost power - I'm assuming as a result of me doing hard resets when it back screens on me. Anywhere else I should look in EV?
Currently running memtest and it seems to be doing fine. On third pass, no errors.
No overclocks on the system either.

right, progress i think.
i installed the gpu again and ran furmark.
every time i ran this, got a black screen and lock up.
reset and got black screen as desktop loaded.
reset again and loaded to desktop, opened browser to update here and... black screen. twice.
gpu removed now, booted fine and able to type update in here. NO issues when using onboard graphics.
pretty confident its a gpu issue now, would you concur?

Considering you're only getting issues when the GPU is installed I'd say it's your GPU.

Stress your pc a bit with onboard graphics to see what happens

yup, tried that. no issue.
will call retailer monday am. their site shows my purchase and states out of warranty. where do i stand, gpu is 21 months old, not had too hard a life. i'd expect a card to last longer than that?
