Help with build £300-£350

The i3-6100 is clocked at 3.7GHz, the i5-6400 at 3.3GHz. In the tasks he'll use it for you'd only see performance loss if anything. Because he's not going to use more than one or two cores.

Like I said, even a Pentium would do for such tasks and an i3 is already a little luxury/overkill, so why spend extra on a more expensive i3 or even i5. The SSD will provide the snappiness.

I always try and buy the best i can get with the budget i have at the time so then the computer will last longer in terms of performance life.

I agree its overkill but who knows in 3 or 4 years time the extra grunt from an i3 or i5 would surley prove the better option if budget allows?

So why get a PSU with only 3-year warranty?

See above for my comment on 3.7 i3 v 3.3 i5 and weigh that before deciding.

I did look at the i5 6400 but at the time the price difference was going to put him over budget but i might consider it again as since we have swapped things the overall price has come down

Indeed, another option for spending a bit more money would be to get a Z170 motherboard and that would give to option for super fast m.2 drives when they become cheaper. You could also take advantage of higher ram speeds, and get a free copy of doom :)

for example this motherboard

think i will go with the i3 as its a higher clock than the i5 and i think with the work he will be doing on the PC the higher clock will be better.

how are the Intel stock CPU coolers these days are they quiet as thats another thing he would prefer is a quiet PC i was thinking i could get a better CPU cooler as this is coming under budget now

Noise-wise I don't mind the stock cooler with i3's after I tune the fan profile a bit so it doesn't ramp up and down so much. And cooling-wise, it's even overkill.

fair enough, as of today, web browsing speed does benefit from higher clock speeds. Doesn't stop internet bandwidth from majorly bottle-necking us all!

Ill probably leave it with the stock cooler then, Thanks :)

Yes Lukilly we have Sky Fiber so the Internet is pretty nippy still i wouldnt mind more speed when im downloading huge game files and other huge files :D

My dad has the side off his machine despite me telling him to put it on but you can barely hear the thing its so quiet, not like my machine LOL.

I have bought the parts and put it all together Installed windows 7 and everything seems to be working but on the motherboard i noticed from start up it has an orange glow at the back of the board its like a line through the mother board and it glows orange then fades out after 1-2 seconds then fades back to orange and its just doing this 24-7 anyone have any idea what this is im wondering if its an error message on the board but i cant find anything on the asus motherboard page or in the manual i got with it????

I dont think its just a light as ive never seen anything like this on a motherboard before.

Think i have found what it is its a function on the motherboard its a Gaming Audio LED illuminated design https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/H110M-K-D3/ :o:confused::rolleyes:

Yeah they often have the audio path illuminated these days. Some have even more, some RGB too. I think your board isn't the D3 model though, it should be the DDR4 model - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...151-ddr4-micro-atx-motherboard-mb-684-as.html

You might find an option in the BIOS to turn it off, or in Asus software somewhere.
