First time builder here, I put together my PC switched on got black screen OK.... removed rx480 now I have a picture, anyone fancy helping out as to what I've done wrong?

Using HDMI and I was a bit confused with the "VGA" cable and the "perif" cable on my PSU used the VGA one hahah

EDIT: using the define s case and the case fans aren't running aswell, do they wait till a certain temp to start going or always on?

Hmm a bit more information is required..

List all your hardware specs..

PSU make and power
Motherboard/Ram/CPU

Have you installed the latest rx 480 drivers with the card removed then tried it again? What power supply are you using?
 
Managed to sort the fan issue, used another connector
I5 6500
Gigabyte g1 sniper b7
16gb hyper fury 2133mhz
Evga g2 550w modular PSU
Rx480 Nitro+

Not installed the latest drivers without no.

EDIT: was waiting on reply and it randomly popped up on screen running running at 800*600 won't let me change resolution lol

You really need to install the drivers mate.
